Talk:Herstmonceux
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm going out on a limb here. I grew up in Sussex and was driven through Herstmonceux each year on our annual outing to Bexhill. Along with the Monkey Puzzle tree, and before getting to Windmill Hill, we always used to pronounce it Herst-mon-zoo. I'd like to update the wiki page to reflect this pronounciation, but before I do wanted to ask others how it is pronounced.

I concur with your pronounciation. I was born in Hastings and lived there for 20 years. My parents and their peers (life-time Sussex inhabitants) pronounced it Hers-mon-zoo (with a silent T). Are there Wikipedia users who live in Herstmonceux and can give us the definitive contemprary pronounciation?

Well as no one has commented in over a month I'm going to update the main page with Paul's version, which is quite correct in it's silent "t" version.

As someone brought up in the shadow of Hers-mon-zoo Castle, I concur. It was also never Hers-mon-syu, but perhaps George Cowie has later info.

[edit] Rewrite
In accordance with [1] the Wikipedia notes on writing about settlements, one of the recommendations is that, in order to reduce the number of stubs, villages and other settlements within a civil parish should be in one article. It also gives recommendations on the headings for the paragraphs. Hence the rewrite. Peter Shearan (talk) 12:01, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
