There is a reported superstition from southwestern Sweden to spit three times at the herring soup pot while it is cooking, throwing the soup away if any attempt misses. Swedish tradition suggests that this will prevent the herrings from coming alive in your stomach.

I can not find this being a common practice, although I would image it was probably done somewhere. / Fred-Chess 10:05, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
