Hertsa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hertsa or Herţa (Ukrainian: Герца, Romanian: Herţa) is a city located in the Chernivtsi Oblast (province) in western Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Hertsaivsky Raion (district).

Coordinates: 48°9′N, 26°15′E

The town is located on the Romanian border and there is still a strong sentiment of discontent in Romania about the fact that the town and the still largely Romanian populated Hertza region was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. It was later attached to the Ukrainian SSR. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, it has been part of independent Ukraine. The city has a large Romanian community, comprising 95% of the total population.
