Herschel Whitfield Arant

Herschel Whitfield Arant (July 18, 1887 - January 14, 1941) was an American legal academic and jurist of the 20th Century.

He was born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama; received a B.S. degree from the University of Alabama in 1910; received B.A., M.A., and LL.B. degrees from Yale University in 1911-15. After a few years of law practice, he became professor of law at Emory University, 1916-20; assistant professor of law at Yale University, 1920-22; dean and professor of law at the University of Kansas, 1922-28; and dean and professor of law at Ohio State University, 1928-39. In 1939, he was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and served until his death less than two years later.
