Herreninsel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The island Herreninsel with an area of 238 ha is the biggest of the three main islands of the Chiemsee. Together with the islands of Fraueninsel and "Krautinsel" it forms the municipality of Chiemsee.

Herrenchiemsee is inhabited by only about 300 people. The island is famous for the castle of Herrenchiemsee built by Ludwig II of Bavaria.

Apart from the castle the island also consists of the Old Castle Herrenchiemsee - a former augustinian monastery (Monastery Herrenchiemsee).
