The lead was initially to be played by Sanjay Dutt, but Ghai changed his mind after witnessing Dutt in his drug phase during the shooting of Vidhaata, and gave the role to Shroff.

[edit] Plot

The film starts off with Pasha (Amrish Puri) being taken to prison. To get out of the situation, he writes to his best man, Jackie (Jackie Shroff). Jackie goes to Shrikanth Mathur (Shammi Kapoor) and warns him. He then kidnaps Shrikanth's daughter Radha (Meenakshi Shesadri). He tells her that he is a police officer; they fall in love, and she finds out that he is a goon. Nevertheless, she does not leave him, but urges him to surrender. He goes and surrenders to the police, and he is imprisoned for two years. Back home, Radha tells her brother Damoder (Sanjeev Kumar) the whole truth. To keep Radha from getting married to somebody else, he calls his friend Johnny (Shakti Kapoor) to put on a show that Radha and Johnny love each other. Johnny misunderstands and actually falls in love with Radha. When Jackie comes back, he starts working in a garage and trying to reform himself. Despite everything, Shrikanth kicks him out of his life. After many days and events that follow, Damador finds out that Johnny is a drug smuggler. After getting released from prison, Pasha desires revenge against both Shrikanth and Jackie, so he kidnaps Radha, Shrikanth and Damoder. Jackie comes at the last moment and frees all of them. Shrikanth lets Radha marry Jackie.

[edit] Original ending

In the original ending of the movie, Jackie and Radha die, while trying to kill Pasha. Although the movie was a blockbuster hit, the public didn't like the tragedy at the end, and many even revolted. Some cinemas were even burned. The movie's ending was remade with Jackie and Radha alive.
