[1]Herando Planells Jr. was born November 4, 1976 in Los Angeles, CA he is the head coach of the Basketball Japan League (BJ) team Ryukyu Golden Kings.As Coach Hernando Planells enters his tenth season coaching basketball he has distinguished himself as one of the top trainers for basketball development and as an up and coming coach at the professional level. Coach Hernando has coached at the high school, college and professional ranks. He has also choreographed basketball action in movies and commercials.

[edit] EARLY LIFE and FAMILY
Coach Hernando was born in Los Angeles to mother, Filipina Carmen Waga-Pangan from Cagayan de Oro City in the Southern Philippines and father, Hernando Sr. from Spain. Hernando currently lives in Okinawa, Japan with his wife Carmel and their two children, Preston and Gabrielle. Prior to scouting, Hernando founded ELITE athlete training which specialized in personal training and consulting services for athletes. Through his work with ELITE, Hernando trained and assisted over a hundred athletes reach their goal of gaining a college scholarship or playing professionally.
[edit] COACHING CAREER
From 2003 to 2005 Hernando served as assistant coach in charge of offense for Citrus College, one of the top Community Colleges in the State of California. While at Citrus he assisted the Owls in winning consecutive tournament titles, post back-to-back winning season in 20 years, guided Citrus to its highest state ranking in school history (6th), established highest single season scoring average at 86ppg and defeated the regular season No. 1 ranked Los Angeles City College and California State Champions, Compton College.
Other coaching stops include the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Head Varsity Coach at Los Angeles High School and Immaculate Heart High Schoolin Tucson, Arizonaand as an assistant at Monrovia High School.
In 2005 Coach Hernando was named first Vice President of Basketball Operations/Head Coach in Wyoming Golden Eagle history. At that time, 28 years old, he was the youngest professional basketball coach in the country.
For the 2006/2007 Coach Hernando served as Head Basketball Coach for the Hollywood Fame, a team that participated in the American Basketball Association(ABA). Coach Hernando started the season as the assistant coach and Director of Player personnel to former NBA head coach Don Casey. Coach Casey left the Fame in January and Hernando took over leading them to a second place finish in their division and making it to the second round of the playoffs.
The last three years Coach Hernando has served as a scout for Marty Blake who is the Director of Scouting for the National Basketball Association(NBA). Since 1971, Marty Blake and Associates have provided professional basketball scouting and consulting to the NBA and to clients around the globe. In his role as a scout Coach Hernando puts together scouting reports evaluating NBA prospects which are circulated to every NBA GM and player personnel director. During his time in Japan, Coach Hernando will continue to serve as a scout for Marty Blake, specializing in scouting the Asian countries.

Hernando’s experience and background has allowed him to be a basketball choreographer for Reelsports Solutions, on motion pictures. Coach Hernando choreographed the basketball scenes and trained the actors on movies and commercials. In 2001 Coach “H” was named the head coach for the Bouncers on [TV SPIKE TV’s] smash hit SLAMBALL. His two year run with the Bouncers saw them qualify for the playoffs, lead the league in scoring and being voted the most “exciting team in Slamball”. In 2004-2005 Coach “H” was hired to train the athletes of “Extreme Dodgeball”, the highest rated show on the Game Show Network.
In 2006 Coach Hernando teamed up with Radiant Pictures and choreographed a Japanese basketball commercial featuring Japanese Basketball superstar Yuta Tabuse for Nissay Insurance.
- Hernado has also choreographed the basketball scenes and trained the actors in “Coach Carter” starring Samuel L. Jackson.
