Herman Hethke was a hermit who built a stone house in the Cold Creek Canyon preserve in Los Angeles, California.[1]
A sign at the entrance to the house reads:
Welcome to the house of hermit Herman Hethke. Although census records provide contradictory information about this unusual resident of Cold Creek Canyon, it is known that he came to the United States from Germany in 1883, listing occupations of farmer and gold miner. Married twice, father of two sons, it is believed that he lived here in the canyon between wives from approximately 1910-1920 in the unique hut he blasted from sandstone.
