Here I Am, Lord

Here I Am, Lord is a sacred song composed by Dan Schutte in 1979 after Vatican Council II, when the Catholic Church began using vernacular hymns at Mass. Its words are based on Isaiah 6:8 and Samuel 3. The song was then published by North American Liturgy Resources and was later purchased by New Dawn Music, a subsidiary of Oregon Catholic Press. It quickly proved to be a popular song at Catholic masses as well as at Protestant services. It can be found in most English hymnals as standard repertoire and has also been translated into many languages.

The refrain is the best-known part of the song and reads as follows:

Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.
