[edit] Plot

Frasier buys his father, Martin, a telescope as a gift. Whilst looking through it Martin spots a woman, Irene, who is looking back at him through another telescope.

The two begin to communicate with each other, using large pads of paper, asking and answering each others' questions. They exchange a great deal of information, and Frasier eventually convinces Martin to get her telephone number.

Daphne Moon, Martin's physical therapist, who is with him throughout the information exchange, and Frasier leave Martin to talk to Irene on the telephone, fully expecting the two to go on a date with each other. It is very surprising for them to hear Martin has turned the offer down.

Frasier questions Martin on why this was. Martin eventually claims that Irene's middle name was Rose, which was the same middle name as his wife, Hester Crane. As Hester was said to have died a few years before, Martin says he feels that he is not ready to move on.

When Daphne remembers that Irene's middle name was not Rose, she questions Martin again. He tells the truth; that he is feeling self conscious because of his hip, which was injured when he was shot. Daphne convinces Martin to go on a date with Irene.
