Herdy Gerdy

This article describes the video game Herdy Gerdy. For the musical instrument with a similar name, see Hurdy gurdy.

Herdy Gerdy is a video game for the Playstation 2 released in 2002. It was developed by Core Design, and published by Eidos Interactive. Critically, the game was a modest success, receiving an aggregate score of 70% on Gamerankings. Commercially, the game was a flop.[citation needed]

When the evil wizard Sadorf casts a spell on Gerdy's father, the Master Herder Gedryn, Gerdy is determined to save his dad and the magical island that they live on from Sadorf's evil rule.

It has a surprisingly large environment (around 40 different areas) as well as 12 different fictional creatures to herd into their different pens. The game requires strategic thinking as some animals eat the others, some animals cannot jump, some cannot swim and each animal kind requires a separate herding technique.

You have to collect a variety of herding tools to help you on your way, and there are alternate pathways to reach the end.

[edit] Herding Tools

Herding Stick - Doops are attracted to its sound and will gather around it.

Magic Flute - When Gerdy plays it some creatures around him will follow him as long as he keeps playing the flute.

Elvin Horn - Emits a short blast that will scare off most creatures.

[edit] Creatures

Doops: Doops are like chickens. Gerdy needs the Herding stick to put them into their cage. They stay around the herding stick. He can also chase them into the Doops cage.

Bleeps: To make Bleeps follow Gerdy, he needs the magic flute.

Gromps: Gromps are like monsters. If they see Gerdy they chase him. Gromps hate the horn so they will chase Gerdy if they hear the horn. They eat most other creatures.

Grimps: Grimps are little black creatures. They eat most other creatures and attack Gerdy if they see him, unless Gerdy blows the flute. Thats the only way to make Grimps follow you.

Honks: Honks are like ducks. They follow you if you blow the flute.

Glooters: Glooters can be found in Foxtown. They follow Gerdy if he blows the flute.

Honklings: Honklings are the baby's of Honks they also follow the flute when played by Gerdy and go into the same pens as Honks, they hatch when Honks are around.

[edit] Gameplay

The idea of gameplay is rather simple: you must herd enough creatures into their pens to unlock areas and new levels. However, it is not quite so straightforward, as the various creatures have certain reactions and skills; some swim whilst some drown, for example. The levels themselves are difficult to negotiate, with pirate ships, winding caverns, and ruins blocking your path.

[edit] HUD

The HUD (Head-up display) is relatively simple: there are three coloured displays at the top of the screen. To the left, the display shows the number of dead animals thus far in the level, accompanied by an image of a prone animal. The next menu, in the centre of the screen, with the animal shown standing, represents those alive and free, and the display on the right shows those that have been captured.

At the bottom of the screen is a bar with dots: this shows a ratio of how many animals have been captured to the total of animals in the level. Each dot represents 5% of the this shows in the ratio to the level how many creatures you have captured.

Finally, the map shows your position (represented by an arrow), animals (represented by dots of different colours), pens (squares of varying colour), rainbow buttons(rainbow dots), and the gypsy at the end of the level.
