There is a robust consensus among contemporary European leaders that peace and prosperity is best served by cooperation with the U.S. Characterizing European leaders as pro- or anti-American leads to a misleading and distorted view.[1] However, the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 led to significant disagreement; with millions of Europeans taking to the streets to question the wisdom of an invasion. During the George W. Bush administration, public opinion of America has declined in most European countries. The previously strongly favorable opinion of America became successively worse between 2000 and 2006.[2] However, the strategic friendship between Europe and the U.S. remains strong, despite tensions.[1]

Historically, anti-Americanism In early 2002, the #1 best seller in France was L'Effroyable imposture, which claimed that 9/11 was a conspiracy orchestrated by the U.S. government[3]. It broke the French record for first-month book sales.[4] In Europe in 2002, vandalism of American companies was reported in Venice, Athens, Berlin, Zürich, Tbilisi, and Moscow.[5]

European anti-Americanism well predates the invasion of Iraq and the Bush Administration, with criticisms of American "hegemonism", the coining of the term "hyperpuissance", and the dream of making the EU a "counterbalance" to the United States all flaring up in the '90s. The usual criticisms were also levied, that America was enforcing sanctions against Iraq for oil, and attributing sinister motives to the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Serbia.[6] French anti-americanism predates the founding of the United States with the belief that it was a barbaric land and all who went there also degenerated.[7]
