In 1993, when his brother Congressman Mike Espy was appointed U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Espy ran unsuccessfully in a special election to fill his brother's open seat. Three years later, Espy was indicted by a Grand Jury on charges of making false statements to obtain bank loans to pay off debts from that campaign.[1]. In March of the following year, a Federal District Court in Oxford, Mississippi, dismissed the last of the six charges against him.[2].

Currently, Espy serves as Mayor of Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Espy's children include a son Henry "Chuck" Espy, who currently serves on the Mississippi State Legislature, representing the 26th District.
