Henry E. Huntington Middle School

Henry E. Huntington Middle School (HMS, HEHMS) is academically the top middle school in Southern California according to the California Academic Performance Index (API).[1] It is one of four public schools in San Marino, California and a part of the San Marino Unified School District, the best school district in all of California.[2] The current principal is Dr. Gary D. McGuigan, while the current assistant principal is Mr. Dave Murray.[1] The school is named after Henry Edwards Huntington, who was a famous railroad magnate and business leader.

Henry E. Huntington Middle School is recognized as both a California Distinguished School and a United States Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School. Huntington Middle School has also been the #1 ranked middle school in Southern California for five years in a row, based on the California Academic Performance Index (API). Additionally, over 60% of the student body is involved in either band, wind ensemble, orchestra, dance, choir, drama, or jazz band.[1]

Huntington Middle School owns over 250 networked Apple computers centrally administrated from an Apple server. The school also owns two computer labs with approximately 35 iMacs each, all controlled through the Apple Remote Desktop software. Finally, a mobile cart equipped with an AirPort Extreme Base Station and HP laserjet printer holds about 32 laptop computers.[3]

The PowerSchool Parent Portal grants students online access to their current grades, [4] while the school website lets them view assignments and subscribe to homework RSS feeds.[5] HMS Podcasts are posted online with recent news and announcements.[6]

[edit] Applied and Advanced Tech. Class

In Applied Tech., 7th graders learn about internet safety, digital photography, video filming and editing in iMovie, audio editing and podcasting in Garageband, robotics in Lego Mindstorms, cartoon animation, Adobe Flash authoring in Macromedia Flash MX, Google SketchUp, digital comic creation in Comic Life, online document collaboration in Google Docs, and digital image manipulation and management in iPhoto. The 8th grade Advanced Tech. class visits the Wired NextFest every year and enters in video editing contests.[7] At the 2008 Digital Voice Awards, the Applied Tech. class took top Science Award out of all middle and high schools in Los Angeles County.[8]
