[edit] Service in Indo-China

During the Franco-Chinese War, French forces under Captain Henri Rivière captured Hanoi on April 25, 1882. On March 27, 1883, he took Nam Dinh. However, by May 1883 the Black Flags were encircling Hanoi. Rivière attempted to fight his way out on the 16th and again on the 19th. He was shot and killed in the second attempt.

Rivière was also a journalist for La Liberté, and also had articles published in the Revue des deux mondes.

His remains were recovered, and he was buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre, in Paris.
