The William Hengerer Company, known informally as Hengerer's was a Buffalo, New York-based department store chain, with stores exclusively located in the Western New York region.
[edit] History
Founded in 1876 as Barnes and Bancroft and later Wm. Hengerer Co., the company was a founding member of the Associated Dry Goods Corporation in 1916. The Hengerer chain was merged into ADG's Sibley's name in 1981, with its flagship store at 465 Main Street in downtown Buffalo closing by 1987.
[edit] Former Locations
- Buffalo — Downtown/465 Main Street, Former Hengerer's flagship; opened in 1903, became Sibley's in 1981, closed in 1987. The building was renovated after Sibley's departure and is now class A office space known as Lafayette Court.
- Amherst — Opened in 1958. This large free-standing location was located at the corner of Main Street and Eggert Road just beyond the city line. The building is still standing today and is used as offices. Closed in 1987.
- Kenmore-Tonawanda — Sheridan Drive, at the corner of Sheridan and Delaware Road (not Avenue). Opened in 1955. After Sibley's closed in 1983, it was reconfigured into a Bells Supermarket (that location in particular was called "Bells Bazaar") and later a Quality Market. Demolished in 2007.
- Williamsville-Clarence — Eastern Hills Mall, Opened in 1971 as Hengerer's, it became Sibley's in 1981, Kaufmann's in 1990, and Macy's in 2006. This is the only former Hengerer's store to remain in operation (albeit under subsequent names) today.
- West Seneca — Seneca Mall. Opened in 1969 as Hengerer's, it became Sibley's in 1981. It was closed in April 1989, replaced by two new stores at the Walden Galleria in Cheektowaga (opened late 1988), and the McKinley Mall in Hamburg (opened fall 1989). The building was demolished as part of the mall's demolition in September 1994.
