Henderson Group

Henderson Group plc (LSE: HGI, ASX:HGI) is a British asset management company based in the City of London. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index. It is also listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.

The company was formed in December 2003 from the UK-based operations of AMP Limited and was then known as the HHG Group plc. It owned several established businesses:

  • Henderson Global Investors: an investment management company dating back to 1934. It was founded to administer the estates of Alexander Henderson, the first Lord Faringdon.
  • Towry Law: a personal financial planning company founded in the City of London in 1958.
  • Life Services: the life and pension books of Pearl Assurance plc, NPI Limited, National Provident Life Limited and London Life Limited, which were closed to new business, and HHG Services Limited, which provides administration services to the life companies.

It also owned a 50% stake in Virgin Money Group, which it sold to its joint venture partner Virgin Group in 2004. In April 2005, HHG sold the Life Services business and changed its name to Henderson Group plc.

Profits before tax for the year ended 31 December 2004 were £47 million and assets under management on 31 December 2004 were £69.1 billion.

Henderson, Hammerson and Land Securities together form the Birmingham Alliance who are responsible for the Bull Ring Shopping Centre development, Martineau Place and the up-coming Martineau Galleries development.
