[edit] Academics

Hempfield High School continually shows above state average test results on the PSSA tests [1] and the SATs. Academic success is also shown through national merit, where, in 2005-2006, thirteen students were honored as National Merit Finalists. [2] Finally, Hempfield students have consistently excelled in the Pennsylvania Math League. In 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005, the Math Team were the first in their region, and in 2001 and 2006, they were first in the league [3].

Hempfield offers a number of Advanced Placement courses. These include classes in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, French, German, and Spanish Literature, Government and Politics, Music Theory, Physics, Statistics, and History.[1] AP exams for college credit, are also offered in all of these areas. AP courses in the Humanities are offered, however, no AP exam accompanies them.

The district is academically strong and traditionally performs extremely well on the PSSAs and SATs. In 2005-2006, thirteen students were honored as National Merit Finalists. Hempfield offers a wide range of honors and advanced placement classes, which prepare its students for college. To date, nineteen Advanced Placement courses were offered to students, as well as collegiate focused curriculum. In addition, Hempfield was successful at the prestigious "Pennsylvania Math League" competition in 2006. Nearly 80% of Hempfield graduates continue on to excel in post secondary education. Hempfield annually sends its graduates to some of the best colleges and universities throughout the country, including the University of Pennsylvania, Caltech, MIT, Georgetown, Williams, and Harvard. http://www.publicschoolreview.com/school_ov/school_id/69470

[edit] Theater

Hempfield High School is renowned for its extensive theater program and is highly regarded for its annual "Dance Theatre" production,[citation needed] created by Pat Kautter. This is a completely original show which features over 100 students. Dance Theatre will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2008. Hempfield's spring musical productions, under the direction of Dr. Alan Mudrick, are also well known for their excellence. A fall and spring play are also performed annually. The 1,300 seat Performing Arts Center opened in Fall 1995 is among the best constructed, and most expensive, high school stages in Pennsylvania.[citation needed] The "PAC" is often rented out by local dance companies and performance groups to hold their productions.

[edit] Athletics

Hempfield competes in the Lancaster-Lebanon League- as part of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. Except for Ice Hockey, governed by USA Hockey and compete in the Central Penn. Interscholastic Hockey League (CPIHL) and Rugby, which compete in the Eastern Penn. Rugby Union (EPRU). A few notable athletes are alumni of HHS: Tom Herr, former Major League Baseball second baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals, Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, and New York Mets, graduated from Hempfield High School. His son, Aaron Herr, who played for the Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, Lancaster Barnstormers, and St. Louis Cardinals, and who currently plays for the Louisville Bats, also graduated from Hempfield. Finally, Kyle Salyards, another Hempfield alumni, swam the 200 meter breast stroke in the 2000 Olympics. John Murray played goalie for HHS Ice Hockey before moving on to the OHL, playing for the Kitchener Rangers then Kingston Frontenacs Murry had an impressive 40-9-1 record with the Rangers [4]. The Concert Band is a 120+ performance group which accepts all levels of musicians from all grades. The Jazz Bands include the Jazz band who hosts a variety of shows during the year and the Jazz Lab Band which performs with the Jazz Band during the spring jazz concert. All of the bands at Hempfield are supervised by the department chair of music, Mr. William Powers.

Hempfield is also the home to several choral groups; Hempfield Singers, Bel Cantos, Concert Chorale, and Chamber Singers. All are under the direction of Dr. Alan Mudrick. Hempfield Singers is a high level choir which is open by audition. Bel Cantos is an all female-choir, also selected through audition. Concert Chorale is a larger group that is open to any student. The Hempfield Chamber Singers is an elite group which includes a small number of singers. The Chamber Singers perform the national anthem at many of Hempfield's home basketball games.

The Hempfield Orchestras are under the direction of Mr. Donald Grabowski. The performing groups include: Symphony Strings, an orchestra tailored to advanced musicians; Concert Strings, a performing orchestra designed for underclassmen; and Concertus Musicus; a select chamber orchestra.

All orchestras, bands and choirs perform at either the holiday concert, the winter concert and a spring concert as well. Some groups have shows outside of the Hempfield music department, which change every year.[5]
