[edit] Kundun
I am not certain but the changes that were made to this movies description does not seem kosher: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kundun I do respect everyones opion (or try to) but the last changes are in direct conflict what the movie was about. Is it Ok to revert? --SKirthova 00:25, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- It is always ok to revert, as long as you give your reasons - it's a wiki! But it might be more fruitful if you try opening up a discussion on the talk page of the article, or asking the editor on his/her user talk page. tiZom(2¢) 01:13, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

I need help I am sorry, I cannot figure out how to reach an administrator to find out how to correct my errors form yesterday and today.
john 01:48, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
Sorry I have caused issues, but I am new and learning how to link. I tried to reach the administrator that sent me a message today about a new page called Eco-Logo I started this morning. I could not figure how how to reach him/her.
I found the name Terrachoice when I went through the Environmental Choice website independant of Wikipedia.. Then about an hour ago I found this red link on wikipedia for Terrachoice. So I thought I would expand. I just spent 1 hour reviewing terrachoice webpage to learn what they do..etc.
So I am Not sure how to continue with new pages or links for subjects started long before I joined wikipedia. I live in Canada and am interested in Environmental issues, so I am trying to work on subject of Eco-logos found on products such as Dow Chemical Canada Inc. and Weyerhaeuser Company Limited which are worldwide firms that use this logo along with Govt of Canada crown corporations such as Ontario Power Generation Pickering Wind GS. They all promote this logo used by Environmental Choice (Canada which terrachoice appears to run... They somehow manage this program I believe like. Green Seal (USA) Eco Mark (Japan) Ecolabel (EU - used by the United Kingdom and Italy) NF Environnement (France) Blue Angel (Germany) according to this site from the Govt of Canada http://www.ns.ec.gc.ca/g7/eco2.html
I await your reply. I do not work for Federal govt of canada, environmental choice or terrachoice. ....
I started when I was working at building The Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN) which has 15 member countries. http://www.gen.gr.jp/members.html
- Thanks for your efforts ;). You should be able to help develop Terra Choice Environmental Services Inc. into a nice article. Stick around. ∴ here…♠ 06:20, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] copyright?
Where was that help desk for copyright questions again? Just to make sure: Is such an image copyrighted? If not for the "image" part, then probably for the text? Just wondering. Thanks, Ibn Battuta 03:46, 15 May 2007 (UTC) PS: Just in case someone is wondering: It belongs to this e-bay auction. I would like to use it as a reference, but that doesn't seem very reasonable if the image is not accessible anymore...
- "All text and images not belonging to eBay in this auction are © 2007 MBoCC, Inc. All rights reserved." So says the bottom of the eBay page. LaraLoveT/C 04:16, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- If that's your answer, could you please tell me what you mean? I don't trust anyone to have a copyright just because he claims so. The net's full with people claiming copyrights they don't have. As a matter of fact I sincerely doubt that they have a copyright on either the image or the note. --Ibn Battuta 06:43, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

- If you are able to illustrate your position by attributing your claims, the project will be able to use the image. Without independant verification, your skepticism carries no more weight than their copyright claim. Good luck! ∴ here…♠ 07:04, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

- Why do you doubt the copyright? I think if copyright is claimed Wikipedia must accept the claim; and if they don't own it, then someone else presumably does. If copyright is not claimed too. Only if copyright is released do we have a starting point. Notinasnaid 07:27, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- Sorry, but I don't think this is getting anywhere. Is there some specialized help desk or not? --Ibn Battuta 09:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC) FYI: Copyright is a right of the creator of a work, not some vendor of any goods. In some countries, copyright can never be transfered; in others, there are severe restrictions. Owning an image and selling it at ebay is not automatically grounds for owning the copyright as well. In fact, vendors of images (e.g., posters) commonly do not own the copyright to them. Second, copy right is only granted on the basis of copyright laws, not on the basis of someone's claim to it. (As a matter of fact, if someone falsely claims a copyright, this may even be considered illegal.) Copyright laws obviously differ largely between countries. Most countries, however, have some rule about the threshold of originality. I am not familiar with the scope of the US interpretation of the threshold of originality and don't know whether it applies to a written piece of paper. Third, there is a fair use doctrine in the US which is used at Wikipedia.
- You might try Wikipedia:Requested copyright examinations, to which it is tangentally related. Notinasnaid 09:47, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Shared IPs are an important consideration when interacting with anonymous editors. I've not found good instructions on how to research the shared status of a given IP address. I added a company called Rocket Science to the Rocket Science home page. Why was this entry deleted? Do I no longer have editing rights? My user name is kezzafazza, and I understand why I was first deleted as I included a web address, but I then removed this and typed in one re: the company. I think including this company name is the same as a film or band etc? Please can you give me an explanation. - (edit conflict) I am removing it. The article in question was speedily deleted as spam. You reposted an identical version of it, which was subsequently tagged as spam again. You blanked the page, which has now been tagged for a blanked deletion, and now your edit warring to add a company with no article to a list of uses for the term 'Rocket science'. [edit] question from an anon user
how to see the place as google earth in wikipedia
- It's unclear what you're asking. If you are looking for the article about the program known as Google Earth, please see Google Earth. Dismas|(talk) 12:33, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, it's unclear. I'll make a guess: Are you saying you found an article in Wikipedia, and you would like to see the place it covers in Google Earth? (If not, please restate your question.) If so, please look for a link labeled either "Coordinates" (in the upper-right corner of the page, or else in an External Links section) or "Maps and aerial photos" (in an External Links section). Clicking either the coordinate numbers (not the word "Coordinates" itself) or the "Maps ..." link will take you to a page that lets you view the relevant location using many kinds of mapping software and websites, including Google Earth. --Tugbug 18:46, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

What is the policy concerning creating a page that redirects from a spelling mistake? In this case, Huntingdons to redirect to Huntingtons - Tiswas(t) 15:37, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- For common spelling mistakes (Niagra Falls → Niagara Falls), as well as capitalization (ebay → eBay) and punctuation errors (Will and Grace → Will & Grace), it's encouraged to set up redirects for these pages. Redirects take up virtually no memory, and make the encyclopedia easier to use for most. See WP:R for more info. tiZom(2¢) 15:48, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Renominating Articles for Deletion
I'm sure there used to be a guideline saying that an article which has just passed AfD and been kept shouldn't be renominated until a month has passed. But now I can't find it. What happened to it? Lurker 18:01, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know, but did you try all the links under User:John Broughton/Editor's Index to Wikipedia#Del? If the article you are thinking about isn't there, you could add a link to the Editor's Index to it, if you should find it by other means. You can also try searching Wikipedia with Google for the keywords: afd renominate month. Some of the hits look like they might have something to do with your question. --Teratornis 21:39, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- The closest hits to relevant are on talk pages. People are saying "wait before renominating" but nobody can point to a policy. Lurker 16:27, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Spoiler tags
User:David Gerard has been removing spoiler tags from such articles as Star Wars, My Fair Lady, etc. etc. because they are not recent. Is this a new Wikipedia policy or is he unilaterally imposing his own views? Clarityfiend 18:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- That does not sound a good argument. If you haven't seen it, then the age is irrelevant. There is a tag in Don Quixote (1605) after all. Someone else also seems to have removed it from A Clockwork Orange on the grounds that it is "patronising - of course a 'plot summary' will tell people the plot". Unfortunately, I don't know how to deal with situations like this. Is there an appropriate warning, or does one just debate article by article? Notinasnaid 18:30, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- (e/c) Try Wikipedia:Spoiler warning which doesn't help much in this situation. I mean does Romeo and Juliet or the biblical Book of Ruth need a "spoiler" tag? I doubt a policy to specify would really get wide consensus. Some people object to all such tags, saying they violate Wikipedia:No disclaimer templates. Also, you should bring this up on his talk page first, to get his reason. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 18:34, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- The problem is where to draw the line. The Bible is pretty clear cut, but you're making a big cultural assumption that everybody knows how Romeo and Juliet ends up. Is someone from say the Sudan or even China guaranteed to be familiar with it? Clarityfiend 19:36, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
-
- See also [1], which I just added to the template talk page. I can find no sign of discussion. Notinasnaid 18:41, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't know about on-wiki discussion, but there appears to have been some conversation on the en-wiki mailing list. See the archive here (the threading is a little wonky, but the discussion is under the heading "WikiEN-l {{spoiler}} vs. writing a goddamn encyclopedia"). Carom 18:52, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Well, it's good to know there's a mailing list somewhere which can discuss, decide and make changes to how editors need to work without that tiresome on-Wiki consensus stuff. What a time saver! Notinasnaid 19:02, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, things become clearer. A guidline relating to the 'spoiler' tag is proposed for deletion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Spoiler warning. It may be that some editors believe that (a) the result is a foregone conclusion and (b) that deleting the guideline will lead to the deletion of the tag and (c) that they might as well start before the conclusion of the debate. [edit] Replacing redirect with disambiguation
Years ago, I saw a radio station's format as "adult alternative". Eventually, I'm going to create an article that will have a couple books as the primary source where a vast majority of the information will come from. Now these books themselves are heavily cited, so my question is when citing from this book, do I cite the book or should I cite where the book got the information? Also, how does Wikipedia prefer citations that are heavily drawn from a single source? I know how to reuse the same citation (<ref name="A"/>) but if I'm pulling many references from one or two books, should I instead also list the page number where it came from? Thanks in advance.↔NMajdan•talk 19:51, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

- Makes sense. Sounds like I'll have a lot of "Ibid"s. Any advice on my first question?↔NMajdan•talk 20:55, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- You can use {{cite book}} to format such a citation in a standard way, if you like. Don't use "ibid", please see WP:FOOTNOTE for how to format in footnote style. it is probably best to cite the book you actually used, but you can cite Book A (Quoting Source B) or the like. - Thanks, but just now I tried it. Didn't work. What do you see at the 'Finings' article in comparison to the 'edit this page' page of that article?--Zymatik 21:42, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- According to the edit history of Finings, you have never edited that article. There are a couple of reason this may have happened. Sometimes editors think they clicked save page, when they really clicked show preview. What I think is more likely is that when you clicked save page, it either took you to a show preview screen anyway (which sometimes happens) or the database was locked and you didn't notice the text at the top sayiong your changes could not be saved. Unfortunately, whatever the reason, unless you saved the changes in some manner they are gone. It's a good idea to highlight and copy your changes before posting so that if something like this happens, or you get an edit conflict, you don't lose the edits (when doing a large edit, where your changes are not to one discrete section, click cntrl+a and then copy the whole page).--Fuhghettaboutit 22:00, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Well, fortunately I did happen to save the complete contents of the editing field to a Notepad file on my PC. Everything is there. I was originally using Mozilla, but just now I switched to IE7 and I see the same problem with it immediately. Then I copy the contents of the Notepad file into the editng field of the article (via IE7) and then click 'Show preview'... same darn thing :-(--Zymatik 22:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Your problem was unclosed reference tags. A reference starts with <ref> and ends with </ref>. If </ref> is missing then the software thinks everything after the reference start is part of the reference. See also Wikipedia:Footnotes. PrimeHunter 00:40, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

- According to the edit history of Finings, you have never edited that article. There are a couple of reason this may have happened. Sometimes editors think they clicked save page, when they really clicked show preview. [edit] How can I suggest that someone be banned?
This kid keeps undoing edits that are verified. Plus, he has made a personal attack. How can I get him banned? Allemannster 22:27, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism is the page you're looking for. Make sure they're properly warned first, though (including a warning that says they will be blocked; see this page for warnings). Veinor (talk to me) 22:32, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Secret checkuser function
Please explain the secret checkuser function. An administrator said..."Checkuser confirmation. Username fits with the MO of that particular banned user."
Question: Couldn't find that user's name on this checkuser (link given). I'm not disputing your judgement. Perhaps your detective skills are superior than most? (not being sarcastic)
Response: I've sadly been dealing with this problem user for the past 6 months now. I know what I'm looking for when this one's active or has been active. And not all checkuser results are published on site.
Question: Tell me more! I'm not so interested in ----(editor's name). How does one submit a request to the secret checkuser?
Response: I cannot say anything else. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by VK35 (talk • contribs) 23:04, 15 May 2007 (UTC).
- Have a look at WP:CHECKUSER and m:CheckUser Policy. Addhoc 23:07, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

- FOLLOW UP QUESTION - The links that Addhoc provided do not mention anything about a secret checkuser request or secret file of results that are shared with wikipedians who are not official checkusers. Please explain how to submit a secret checkuser request and how to obtain the results.VK35 23:22, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- There is no "secret checkuser" group as far as I know. Checkuser is a specific ability on Wikipedia and a set number have the ability to run checkuser requests, and they are not secret (as far as I know). What Ryulong is talking about is that the full report doesn't have to be disclosed on WP:RFCU always. Sometimes, on WP:AN/I, I see checkusers running quick checks on suspected sockpuppet requests. Or at least I think they are checkusers running queries while reading incidents. x42bn6 Talk Mess 23:28, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Please read WP:CHECKUSER carefully. You can't request a secret checkuser just because you're interested in someone's identity. Unless they are clearly violating policy with their actions or you have evidence to suspect them of using socks, revealing their IPs, whereabouts or other information is likely a violation of m:Privacy policy. [edit] Formating Images
On the page for Color Blindness, there are 3 pictures I want to the right next to the article but I can't get it. Can someone do that and tell me how to? Thankyou --LtWinters 23:09, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Which three images were you thinking of? I can show you how if you tell me their names. Nihiltres(t.c.s) 23:35, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
This is a sample image. The pictures below should look similar to people with normal vision (containing numbers, in this case 83), but some of them will not be visible to people with a color vision deficiency. The contrast in these tests is much subtler than commonly seen in other similar tests. On a monitor with a lower light intensity, it becomes easier to see the number. |

[edit] Help creating a Infobox Template
Anyone creative out there with some spare time, who could help me create a Infobox Template. I would like to create an Infobox named Automobile Defunct. I have a model of what I want it to look like at: User:Drussel3/Auto#Defunct_Automobile_-_Suggestion--Drussel3 23:46, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps {{Infobox Automobile}} could have extra parameters added in order to allow it to serve this function as well? It would seem (to me) to be more sensible to expand the capabilities of one infobox, rather than creating another. See {{Infobox Weapon}} for an example of an infobox that serves a wide array of purposes. Carom 00:10, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- You can also ask for help at Wikipedia:Requested templates. PrimeHunter 00:26, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- Carom's comment makes sense to me. You can always have a bot or someone with semiautomated tools add the parameters or make sure not having them doesn't break the box. - Mgm|(talk) 08:55, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

- Can someone assist, or give guidence? I like the idea of updating an existing template, but I don't want to screw it up. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Drussel3 (talk • contribs) 12:12, 16 May 2007 (UTC).
- It may be better to ask for this type of help at Wikipedia:Requested templates which is made for exactly that. PrimeHunter 13:30, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Comment on some sites
Hello everyone. I am need of assistance yet again. I would like some other users who are less scared of external sites than I am to review these two sites for inclusion.
Here is one that is currently on the Super Mario Bros article: http://www.mariomayhem.com/consoles/nes/mario_bros.php
Here is one that another user put on, and I reverted: http://www.consoleclassix.com/gameinfo_smario_nes.html
Because I'm afraid of getting viruses, especially in my current Norton-less state (effin thing refuses to reinstall because I have already used it on my computer previously), I don't go to ANY sites I don't know. I need someone to review the sites to see if they are not ROM sites. I am mostly asking for review on behalf of the user I reverted, who left a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time. --LuigiManiac 00:02, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- Well, no offense, but if you want to be dealing with other websites, maybe you should wait until you have a system that will allow you to look at them. --Tugbug 17:35, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
