[edit] Making new pages

I tried to make a page about my blog, and it was deleted. I am confused because I looked up some other blogs, and many of them are listed. So why can't I make a page for mine?

[edit] Alt Key on Wikipedia

When using MS IE, at least, certain Alt key combinations are co-opted by Wikipedia. For instance, Alt-F jumps to the search box.
Ahh, here's the little booger,
accesskey="f"
is used in the web page HTML <input> control definition for the search box. And there's plenty of other accesskey= definitions in the HTML also.
I don't see anything in "my preferences" that disables this. So the question becomes, where are all these Alt-key redefinitions mentioned, and is there a way to turn them off? Shenme 00:03, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi. You could do a site search via Google. If you search on site:en.wikipedia.org "balancing a bicycle" and go into the cache entry for the result you might be able to find something (I couldn't, strangely).--A bit iffy 09:56, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

It might be helpful if every Help or Reference desk page on Wikipedia had such links at the top (formatted more nicely, of course), with instructions to search for previous answers to a question before asking. The existence of WP:VFAQ indicates that some questioners do not search before asking, and who can blame them given the acknowledged deficiencies of MediaWiki's current built-in search. [edit] Naming of articles on churches

Is there a policy or guideline on how articles on churches should be named? For example, should Church of St. Peter, Brighton be named as such, or can it be named St. Peter's Church, Brighton? I am asking because I want to be sure of my facts before if I change that article's name (and others). I have been told by another user that an admin has said there is a policy or guideline on this, but I'm doubtful there would be and anyway I haven't been able to find such a policy or guideline. The page seems to be centered on the notability of churches, not the naming thereof. If it were me making the decision, I'd probably go the way that I've seen so many school's pages named. That is by using "School name (town, state)". Dismas|(talk) 13:57, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Or if you're trying to go to your own homepage which is set in your browser, there should be an icon at the top of the browser window that looks like a little house. By clicking that it should take you to your homepage.   • Contribution pages cannot be deleted. Those numbers are IP addresses which usually show when you don't log in or when your login doesn't "stick". It seems to be resitrcted to the Teddey account, so I would recommend using the account you know to work. Did you use different computers or browsers when you signed in with the other account. Your Internet Service Provider appears to be Verizon, which if my memory serves me correctly uses dynamic IP addresses which explains the changing numbers. - Mgm|(talk) 13:32, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Following a link from the front page today about Bradley Willman, I noticed that the Willlman page is largely composed of a synopsis of a single legal case (US vs Kline), and that the content of that synopsis is repeated word for word in a linked article on the defendant in that case Ronald Kline.

I *have* created an account, Webmiser or webmiser, I'm not sure which, or if it matters. Allowed a preference I would choose the all lower case version. I got the confirmation email in my webmiser@kascomp.com account and I clicked on the link. The login returns with 'incorrect password' every time. I have asked for a new password, but it says it's already sent one, and only one per 24-hour period is allowed. The problem is that the array (which defines each button) should have 5 items in it: the image, the description, the opening tag (can be more than just a tag), the closing tag and the text to go between the tags (this is replaced by whatever the user has selected if they have something selected). Your B button definition looks to have 7 items so the code will ignore the last two. You might find it easier to stick with the standard Extra edit buttons code and setup a custom button rather than using a copy of the code. [edit] Can I edit in MS Word?

This is my first attempt to edit a Wikipedia article (Victory at Sea). I had hoped to edit it in MS Word where I can more easily show suggested deletions and additions. But when I selected "external editor" in preferences, then tried to open the PHP file in Word, got error message saying I don't have approval to open it.

Confusing. Is editing in Word possible, and, if so, how would I resubmit the edit to Wikipedia?

No, you can't edit Wikipedia articles in Word, as it doesn't understand wikimarkup. The whole 'external editor' thing is experimental; I'm not sure if they ever got it to work (see m:Help:External editor for information on how far they got). --ais523 16:59, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
I use external editors often as the find/replace function on them is better than browsers. You can hit "edit this page", copy the text in the edit box, paste it into the editor of your choice, edit, copy the new material, then paste it back into the article. You won't be able to see if the links work and such but then you can hit "Show preview" before you save your changes so that you can check them at that point. Though, the time between copying and pasting back in the text is generally not long at all. I wouldn't do the same if I were working on something over the course of a few days or anything like that. [edit] Esoteric language in Japanese culture pages

I'd like to know what the policy is in using Japanese words on Japanese culture (anime, manga, music, etc) in place of English words is. I see little point in filling a page with "seiyu" when the author could just as easily call them "voice actors." I would imagine it would be a lot easier to understand if authors didn't do such a thing. In my opinion it just leads to unnecessary confusion which seems to disagree with some of Wikipedia's basic standards. Please clarify.

  • Hi, 72. In general, the Wikipedia style guides prefer the use of English words or foreign origin loan words that have gained common usage in English -- see the Guide to Writing Better Articles, the Manual of Style, and the Manual of Style for Japan-Related Articles. None of these sources are absolute, but they generally recommend use of English unless the foreign word affirmatively adds to the article. Given that the style guidelines are not absolute, you may want to start a discussion on the talk pages of the article in question, or on the anime or Japan project talk pages. I am sad to see this article has been removed without any new article being replaced by it, and insted having this link being redirected to some computer games..

This genre of game do deserve to be represented on the site and should not have been deleted.

I am however willing to write up a new article that will disclude alot of the biased information in the earlier article put in by a person from another game, I am taking that was the issue here...

So if you would consider reopening the article if I can supply you with an article that live up to the expectations then I would be happy to do so.

See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nation-simulation game for information on why it was deleted. Basically, the original article was original research. If you know of reliable sources for the subject, write an article about it in your userspace (User:Maretti/Nation-Simulation Game, for instance), and then go to deletion review to request for your new article to be placed where the deleted article was. I just joined Wiki. I am a composer and producer working in the entertainment industry.. If I search on wiki and put in '"smart guy", it takes me to a page for the sitcom that I composed the theme for.   • Wikipedia only includes material which has already been published elsewhere so that it is verifiable, so unless what you want to add was already covered in a book, magazine, newspaper, website, etc. it's not recommended you add anything you personally know to be true. If you have original content about a television show you would like to wikify, check the list of wikis for a wiki that wants such content. For example, searching WikiIndex for "television" turns up this possibility: The TV IV. That wiki looks pretty good, at least on its Main Page. I did not find the site's editorial policies in a couple of clicks, but the help page mentions that you can write reviews of TV shows, which means they evidently do not share Wikipedia's policy of no original research. And in the interest of hair-splitting, when you say "I just joined Wiki", oldschool purists might think you mean to say you just joined the original wiki, WikiWikiWeb. Since there are thousands of wikis, it's best to refer to each wiki by its proper name (this is Wikipedia, for example). --Teratornis 22:08, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi, Insee - the administrator intervention against vandalism page has instructions - basically, the vandal needs to have been properly warned and to have kept vandalising.   • Hi, Shadow: As far as I can tell, in your preferences, under the "Files" tab, you can set a limit on the size of images on image description pages. If an image is over that limit, it will display at your limit, with a link to a higher res version of the same image. If not, you will get the "no higher resolution available" message.     Has this always been the case? I know that it used to give a link if you wanted to see a larger resolution, but I don't remember ever seeing "No higher resolution available." below the image. ShadowHalo 01:07, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

You can put {{Wikipedia:Today's featured article/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}} on your page, which will show the same article that's on the main page. --TeckWiz ParlateContribs@ 22:22, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Dear Wikipedia:

On December 2, 2006 I registered the username "Sarlic" with wikipedia under the e-mail address Sarlic@toto99.com.

Despite having gone through all of the verification processes, right now when I click to recover my password, the account is telling me that the username "Sarlic" does not have an e-mail address associated with it.

Please let me know what I need to do to recover my password.

Hi there, I seem to be fumbling around and stepping on my own feet while trying to list an article for deletion--see here Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Caucasian Americans (second nomination). Hopefully, the WJAC information can be placed back on it's respective page.

At one time, WJAC had broadcasted on W13BY.
