Should this page be titled Hellenistic Civilization instead? It refers mainly to civilizations outside of Greece that were partly Greek-speking.

Alex Clark

It could be called Hellenistic Civilisation, yes. I am only using it as a temporary redirect for Hisory of Hellenistic Greece until a proper article is written. Adam 02:20, 31 Mar 2OO4 (UTC)

Sorry to change the subject, but is this the same Alex Clark, who had Mr. Burr as a teacher?--Moosh88 23:25, 26 August 2OO5 (UTC)

Me to ,I think so as well

[edit] Hellenism vs. Hellenistic Civilisation

I notice this page redirects from 'Hellenism', yet surely Hellenism as a movement eg. in Renaissance or later art, philosophy etc. as a style and movement might deserve its own page as opposed to the civilisation it idealised or imitated ...

[edit] Kingdoms

Shouldnt the Hellenistic Kingdoms be included here as well? Bythinnia, Galatil etc. ?

Look better: they are mentioned. Aldux 11:19, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] D@mn!

This is REALLY REALLY GOOD ARTICLE! Hats off gentlemen! It seems there are some very fine lovers of the Greeks and Greek ways in the world. God Bless you all. LoveMonkey 16:16, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit

Just to clarify, I made the edit to differentiate between Caesar Augustus (which isn't his correct title) and Octavian. Most historians accept that Octavian attained the title Augustus in 27 B.C. He did, however, attain the praenomen of Imperator shortly before his war with Marcus Antonius (more specifically Cleopatra).

The quote about the future expansion of christianity throughout the hellenistic-roman world (that eventually gave Christianity the opportunity to flourish) is inappropriate if put in the article's beginning and reflects the christian point of view of the meaning of history... I think can be deleted, the Hellenistic World was important for many reasons and the easier propagation of christianity was a secondary consequence (more attributable to the political unification of the roman empire, and then consequentially also to the cultural hellenistic influence in the east) and a quotation about christianity in the article's incipit is Not-NPOV. --Antioco79 13:22, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hellenistic Period

Looking at the articles Hellenistic Civilisation and Hellenistic Period, they both cover somewhat similar ground... I feel that some of what I've tried to put in Hellenistic Period (mainly the cultural aspects, which need to be extended) would fit better into Hellenistic Civilisation, and that the history side would fit better into Hellenistic Period. Any thoughts on the matter? Tbarker 08:11, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

I agree, Hellenistic civilisation should be merged in the period. Miskin 17:00, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Hellenistic period needs a good rewrite anyway. Is anybody against the merge? Miskin

  • It seems to me that the best course of action would be to have Hellenistic Period evolve into a narrative history of the period (that is, kings, battles, politics) and have Hellenistic civilization talk about culture, philosophy, and social aspects. semper fictilis 02:52, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

The efforts to translate the map key on this page of any English/German bilingual folks out there would be greatly appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 160.94.27.229 (talk) 19:33, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
