Helena Roerich
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Helena Roerich (Russian: Елена Ивановна Рерих; February 12, 1879 - 1955) was a Russian spiritual writer, herbalogist and healer. She married the Russian painter, archaeologist and mystic Nicholas K. Roerich on October 28, 1901. They produced two sons, Svetoslav, an artist and George, a scientist and expert on Tibet. Helena was a remarkable woman with an indomitable spirit who accompanied her husband on most of his travels and expeditions. The family left Russia in 1917, days before the beginning of the Revolution and in 1920 they went to New York City for Nicholas Roerich's first exhibition of paintings in America. After two years in the United States, they departed on a four year expedition throughout Central Asia. By then she had already met her Master Morya and worked in close cooperation with him. Named Urusvati (the Light of the Star of the Morning) by the Masters, she devoted her life to working with the Hierarchy. She and Master Morya brought the deeply spiritual Agni Yoga series into being together.
After the expedition, the couple settled in India. Helena died there eight years after the death of her beloved husband and life partner. According to Ruth Abrams Drayer's book Nicholas & Helena Roerich, The Spiritual Journey of Two Great Artists & Peacemakers, (Quest Books) Helena's work was key to bringing about the Era of the Woman, this present time which requires great courage, cooperation and compassion.
Mme. Helena Roerich translated Helena Blavatsky's book The Secret Doctrine into Russian. She was one of the founders of the worldwide Agni Yoga Society with main headquarters in New York.
