Helen Marie Salas (born 5 November 1985) is a beauty queen from Las Vegas, Nevada who has placed in the top five in both the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants.
Salas won the Miss Nevada Teen USA 2004 title in a state pageant held on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on December 13, 2003.[1] This was her first attempt at the title. In August 2004 she represented Nevada in the Miss Teen USA 2004 pageant broadcast live from Palm Springs, California where she placed second runner-up to Shelley Hennig of Louisiana. This was Nevada's highest placement since Victoria Franklin placed second runner-up to Vanessa Minnillo of South Carolina in 1998. Franklin, Salas' sister titleholder, held the Miss Nevada USA 2004 title.
After placing first runner-up in the Miss Nevada USA 2007 pageant in October, Salas was crowned Miss Nevada USA on December 21, 2006 after the previous titleholder Katie Rees was dethroned the previous day amid allegations of raunchy behavior in a Florida nightclub, with several photographs of Rees exposing her breasts, kissing other women, and simulating sexual acts released to the media.[2] This followed a scandal involving the current Miss USA Tara Conner. Salas' "sister" titleholder, Miss Nevada Teen USA 2007, is Danielle Hashimoto.
Salas competed in the Miss USA 2007 pageant broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California and placed 4th runner-up. She placed 3rd in the swimsuit competition, advancing her to the top 10. Then in the evening gown competition, she walked too fast and forget to step her marks and this lead to no score being shown for her presentation on tv. She was assumed to place 5th in evening gown but had she placed 9th or higher, it would still have given her enough points to advance to the top 5. She is one of only a few women to place in the top five of both the Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants. Others that have accomplished this include Danni Boatwright, Nicole O'Brian, Shauna Gambill, Brandi Sherwood, Tara Conner, and Kristen Johnson.
