Helba (ヘルバ Heruba?) is a fictional character from the .hack franchise that encompasses several video games, anime and manga. She provides help and information to some of the main characters in the storylines, though she usually works in the background.
Her avatar in the MMORPG The World is a level 99 Wavemaster outfitted in a white dress with purple triangular designs and what resembles a matching queen's helm, that hides her eyes behind a red visor trimmed by gold. She is quite infamous to other players and especially to system administrators, as she is a professional hacker of extraordinary skills both in and out of The World. The games classify her as an "Original Class" because she edited her character to be beyond what a normal Wavemaster is capable of.
[edit] Background
In .hack//Liminality Kyoko Tohno reveals that Helba's name comes from the long lost net-distributed text, the Epitaph of Twilight. But other than that, little is truly known about the person behind the avatar, or what her true motivations are. As a hacker she manages a large amount of information, and is sometimes willing to share it with others, making her a valuable asset in the storyline. In .hack//Mutation she gives Kite a segment of The Epitaph of Twilight and directions to Net Slum.
Since the events of Deadly Flash and Pluto's Kiss, the World Network Council (WNC) of the United Nations, have passed harsh penalties for hacking or endangering computer systems. Some crimes were punishable by death. This makes hacking a serious offence in the .hack storyline, and Helba must take care in protecting her identity.
[edit] Net Slum
At some unknown point in time, between the beta test of Harald Hoerwick's Fragment and before the events in .hack//Sign, Helba discovers a folder of unused and discarded data. Starting with an unused Root Town, she copies and pastes the data, creating a patchwork area which she names Net Slum.
Only a select few can get to Net Slum, mostly other hackers and those that have been invited. Because of its status, Net Slum has become a sanctum for trash data, and similar unwanted/illegal cyberstuff. It is later revealed that Net Slum has become a haven of Vagrant AI's, though many have become fragmented mostly due to the efforts of the System Administrators and the Cobalt Knights. There are rumors that fragmented character data have become AI's and seek sanctuary themselves there.
In the .hack// video games Balmung follows Kite to Net Slum and shows the administrators where it is. They then try to delete all of the information but it then upsets Morganna and she summons the third phase
In .hack//Quarantine, after beating the game, the player will get mail from Aura telling them to go to Delta Bursting Passed Over Aqua Field. Upon reaching the bottom Aura will give the player hacking abilities again. Then, if the player returns to the desktop, there will be e-mail from Helba giving her member address, as well as Tsukasa's, Subaru's, and Sora's.
