Heinrich, Duke of Saxe-Merseburg (b. Merseburg, 2 September 1661 - d. Doberlug, 28 July 1738), was a duke of Saxe-Merseburg and member of the House of Wettin.
He was the sixth but fourth surviving son of Christian I, Duke of Saxe-Merseburg and Christiane of Scheleswig-Holstein-Glücksburg.
[edit] Life
Before the death of his father, Heinrich received de town of Spremberg as appanage.
For almost forty years he was known as Duke of Saxe-Merseburg-Spremberg; but the death without male issue of his nephew Maurice Wilhelm (1731) changed this.
By this time, Heinrich was the only surviving male member of the family. At sixty-nine years of age, he inherited the duchy of Saxe-Merseburg.
[edit] Marriage and Issue
In Güstrow on 29 March 1692 Heinrich married with Elisabeth of Mecklenburg-Güstrow -sister of Hedwig, the wife of Heinrich's brother August of Zörbig-. They had three children:
- Maurice (b. Spremberg, 29 October 1694 - d. Spremberg, 11 April 1695).
- Christiane Fredericka (b. Spremberg, 17 May 1697 - d. Spremberg, 21 August 1722).
- Gustava Magdalene (b. Spremberg, 2 October 1699 - d. Spremberg, 3 October 1699).
Without surviving male issue, the line of Saxe-Merseburg became extinct on his death.
