Heidelberg is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Heidelberg on the Hurstbridge railway line. Heidelberg is classed as a Premium Station and is in Metcard Zones 1+2.

[edit] Facilities

Heidelberg station is located between Studley Road and Mount Street, with platform access via a subway which connects the two. The Austin Hospital is located near the station.

The station consists of two platforms, in an island format. The island platform has a large red brick building with an enclosed waiting room and a ticket office inside. A large and small Metcard ticket machine is located inside the waiting room, able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A subway is located underneath the station.

Between Heidelberg and Rosanna station the line is single track, and passes under a hill by a short tunnel.

[edit] History

Heidelberg station opened on 8 May 1888. It was once the terminating station on what is now the Hurstbridge line.

At one time there were three tracks running through the station but only two serviced the island platform. The third track was removed after a period of inactivity. When the signals were upgraded to a totally electronic system one of the old mechanical signals was relocated to the side of the station where the third track used to be with a plaque on the platform explaining its historical significance.
