[edit] Tamil or Kannada?
Hebbar Tamil is, from a linguistic standpoint, a dialect of Tamil, with a Kannada substrate. See, for example, the Ethnologue, which lists it as a Tamil dialect[1]. I realise that it sounds odd to many Tamils, but it actually sounds less odd than Jaffna Tamil, for example, which is clearly Tamil and not Sinhala. I have altered the wording of the disambig accordingly.
Proctor says: Yes you are right. The wordings have been altered suitably now such that it reflects the fact that its NOT the Tamil dialect spoken by Iyengars (or Brahmins in general) in Tamil Nadu.
