[edit] Fallowfield image

My fault. I ought to have left you a note explaining the deletion tag. I'm not really trying to delete the image, I'm simply trying to delete the local version (as it is now a duplicate of the Commons version). This sort of image should really be over the Commons, where it can also be used on other Wikimedia projects and can be properly catagorized with other public domain images. Therefore, I uploaded it to the Commons a week or so ago. Typically, when an exact duplicate has been uploaded to the Commons (with the same image name), the local version is tagged with a {{NowCommons}} (aka "ncd") tag and the local version will be deleted by a bot at some point. This type deletion does not interfere with any of the articles using the image, nor does it require any editing of those articles, because the local image will immediately be replaced with the identical Commons image. This is exactly what happened with the other image in the Fallowfield, Ottawa article (Image:SteepleHill Churches ca1910.jpg).

The problem with Image:Fallowfield Road Gang 1880.jpg is that it contained archival references in the image itself. Typically, this sort of information is cropped out of the image and moved to the image description page, which is what another editor did when it was uploaded to the Commons. Unfortunately, the timing of the crop presented a problem, because the local Wikipedia image had yet to be deleted, and suddenly the local and Commons versions were no longer identical. The bot that reviews duplicate local images recognized the fact that the local version and the Commons versions were not bit-by-bit copies, and rejected the deletion. And, therefore, the Commons version (which is cropped and has licensing details in accordance with Wikimedia requirements) won't "take over" from the local version, unless the local one is manually deleted. Therefore, the deletion tag.

I hope that makes sense. The image itself will continue to exist on Wikipedia -- there will just no longer be duplicate versions. Skeezix1000 (talk) 15:44, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
