From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Heaven and Hell, is a 1987 novel written by John Jakes. It is the third and final part of the North and South trilogy. This part focuses on the years of Reconstruction, with most of the novel taking place between the years 1865 to 1868. The story is about the adventures of Charles Main, Madeline Main, Cooper Main, and George Hazard after the war. Charles Main, a veteran of the Confederate army who goes to the Midwestern United States to fight in the wars with the Native Americans and must recover from the trauma of his violent life, is the main character in the novel. The series’s villain, Elkanah Bent, who was believed to be dead, turns out to be alive and kills George’s wife. He is eventually killed by Charles Main. Heaven and Hell also focuses on the Ku Klux Klan, as well as the reason for Elkanah Bent's madness- he is a product of incest through his mother's (a relative of Mary Todd) rape by her own father.
