Hearts that Hate are a fictional band created by acclaimed hip-hop artist MC Lars. During "Signing Emo", a song from his 2006 album The Graduate, MC Lars claims to sample them, under the pretence that they were a Story of the Year-type emo band who have a supposedly short-lived career with their hit song "Cry Tonight".
A Hearts That Hate dummy site and weblog has been created at www.heartsthathate.com.
While on tour in Chicago, MC Lars claimed that Hearts That Hate may remind his fans of "a now successful punk pop band from Chicago", hinting at Fall Out Boy.
[edit] "Cry Tonight"
"Cry Tonight" has been performed by Bowling for Soup, while MC Lars supported them on tour. The Matches, Something with Numbers, Clark St., Patent Pending, Wheatus, and Army of Freshmen have all performed as the false band as well.
On recordings and in videos, Blake, the singer of Hearts That Hate, is played by Steve Conolly who is a former member of the Long Island bands Desendre, Still Small Voice, and The Arrogant Sons of Bitches.
A full, acoustic version of "Cry Tonight" is found on the B-side of the "Signing Emo" single in the UK.
