Early inhabitants of the local area were the Pomo people, who constructed villages in open areas along the Russian River.[7] European settlement commenced in the mid 1800s, with the first Caucasian settlement nearby established downstream along the Russian River near Graton in the year 1836.[8] The city considers its official founding date to be 1857[3] and was incorporated in 1867.[7]

Farming, especially orchards and truck farms, was common within the present city limits from at least the 1890s to 1940s.[9][10]

Downtown Healdsburg is a tourist destination. It is a foot-friendly mecca for tasting local wines, fine dining, upscale boutiques, and art galleries. The galleries range from cooperatives to local one-artist storefronts and include the works of nationally and internationally known masters. Healdsburg hosts a jazz music festival each June, a farmer's market from late spring to late fall; Tuesdays and Saturdays, and a wide range of wine and food related events. The downtown is also a Wi-Fi hotspot.[11]

An intrinsic element of the city's natural environment is the riparian zone associated with the Russian River that flows through Healdsburg. City residents support recycling by use of the Healdsburg Transfer Facility. The city has shown an interest in creating a quiet environment by creating a Noise Element of the General Plan, which defines baseline sound level contours and sets forth standards of quiet for each land use category.
