Agencies were administrative sub-divisions of British India - and were directly ruled by the government.

Under British rule, the Hazara region was split into four parts.

  1. Kohistan Tribal Area
  2. Hazara Tribal Area
  3. Princely State of Amb
  4. Hazara Division (Abbottabad and Mansehra)

The most northern part was the Kohistan Tribal area whilst the southern part was Hazara Division, Hazara Tribal Agency lay between the two.
