[edit] Character outline
Gokudera was born in Italy and is 3/4 Italian and 1/4 (mother) Japanese. His blood type is B, is 168cm tall, weighs 54kg and his hair is silver. His future dream is to become the tenth's right-hand man. He has an ability to play the piano. He dislikes people that are older than him, Bianchi and Adult Lambo.[1]
At school, Hayato is adored by many of the female classmates who view him as the "rebellious badboy." During Valentine's Day, a large group of females constantly followed him around trying to give him chocolate, although Hayato seemed to be more annoyed than flattered by this. Despite his image of a rebel, Hayato excels in his schoolwork and aces all his tests, much to the surprise of Tsuna. This is probably due to his rich upbringing, suggesting that he probably had a multitude of private tutors when he was young. He idolizes Tsuna greatly and considers himself to be Tsuna's right-hand man.
[edit] History
Due to a traumatic childhood experience, every time he sees the face of his older sister, Bianchi, he becomes sick, sometimes even falling unconscious. Oddly enough, he is immune to his sister when she happens to be wearing something that covers part of her face (i.e. glasses or goggles).
When he was younger, he was a talented pianist. However, he soon grew tired of playing after his 'trauma', and instead, decided to join the Mafia. Unfortunately, since he was considered to be a mere pianist, no one wanted to accept him into their family; the fact that he was an oriental half-breed lessened his chances of finding a willing Mafia family to take him in. To become stronger, he sought advice from Dr. Shamal, who, at the time, was working for his family. Hayato seemed to have looked up to Shamal, to the point that Shamal believed Hayato to have copied his hairstyle, and even wanted to learn his assassination technique, the Trident Mosquito. Instead, Shamal taught him how to use dynamites, which caused Hayato's fascination with explosives, eventually choosing them as his main weapons.
In the future arc, more was revealed of Gokudera's past. He and Bianchi are actually half siblings, born by different mothers. Bianchi's mother was married to their father but Gokudera's was a woman with whom he had an affair. Gokudera's mother was a young, beautiful woman and a very talented pianist, whom their father fell in love with at first sight. Not long after, they became involved and the woman bore a child. However, in the mafia, illegitimate children are not tolerated, and everyone was told that Gokudera Hayato was actually from the same mother as Bianchi.
His real mother was allowed to see him three times a year until he was three, when she was killed after driving off a cliff on her way to see her son. It was probably not an accident, because, as Reborn says, "It slid off the road at an impossible location. It's been said that there weren't even tire marks. It was instant death." Suicide was considered, but she had been looking forward to that day and had even brought a present for the young Gokudera. Gokudera himself was unaware of what had happened until he was eight. He had overheard some servants gossiping and fled the mansion the day following.
[edit] Synopsis
[edit] Introduction arc
Hayato "tests" Tsuna's worthiness for becoming the heir to the Vongola Family. Hayato becomes the first member of Tsuna's "family" after Tsuna goes into Dying Will Mode to save both of them from Hayato's wayward dynamite. After this, Hayato becomes fiercely loyal to Tsuna, referring to him as "boss" or "10th", and admires Tsuna to the point of extremes. Hayato would often get angry at Takeshi because he does not want him to get too close to Tsuna. He sometimes gets jealous since Takeshi is usually around Tsuna.
Although his loyalty to Tsuna is unquestionable, the IX boss tested Hayato anyways. The IX needed to be sure that he was going to be a good and reliable subordinate to Tsuna, as Hayato was known as being unreliable and untamed. Hayato passes the IX's "test" and escapes its penalty, death. Even though Hayato does not know of his close brush with death, the experience renews his commitment to Tsuna, and creates a much more solid bond between them as friends.
Hayato also participates in many different comedic events as Reborn 'trains' Tsuna to become the tenth boss of the Vongola family.
[edit] Kokuyo Gang arc
During the Kokuyo Arc, he ranked 3rd as Namimori Junior High's strongest. This made him a target of Mukuro's gang. During his confrontation with the Kokuyo boys, he was nearly killed by his opponent, Chikusa, but managed to survive, after being given treatment by Shamal. He recovered in time to join Tsuna, Reborn, Yamamoto and Bianchi to look for and defeat the Kokuyo Gang. Later in the enemy hideout Hayato fought Chikusa again however when of guard due to the side effect of Shamal's treatment Ken was able to attack from behind. Gokudera was saved however after freeing Hibari and giving him the cure to the Sakurakura virus from Shamal hence allowing him to re-enter the battle. During the final fight between Tsuna and Mukuro, Gokudera was one of the people that were possessed by Mukuro's spirit.
[edit] The Varia arc
In the Vongola Tournament arc, Hayato was first defeated easily by Squalo along with Yamamoto and Tsuna. In order to better his skills he asked Shamal to become his home tutor. Shamal at first refused but later after seeing how reckless Hayato was training alone promised to teach him provided he heal his own wounds.
Hayato was later pitted against the genius Belphegor for the Ring of Storm. At first, he had trouble figuring out Bel's attacks and tricks, but Hayato was later able to turn the tides in his favor and defeat him. However, as he was taking the ring from Bel's supposedly unconscious body, Bel tackled Hayato to the ground in attempt to steal both of the rings. A struggle for the rings ensued, but only lasted for a short time, as Tsuna convinced Hayato not to risk his life - the area they were in had large explosives timed to go off very shortly. When the explosives went off, both Hayato and Belphegor survived, but because Hayato had abandoned the rings, Belphegor was deemed the winner.
Later, during the Sky match,Hayato was revived by Hibari and went up to the roof to save Lambo. After defeating Levi A Tan, using the technique taught to him by Shamal, Hayato proceedd to revive Lambo and Ryohei, meeting up with Yamamoto later on.
[edit] Future arc
Hayato invented his own writing system that he uses in the future arc called 'G-Script'. After Hayato was transported to the future, he decoded a note left by his future self written in this 'language'. After his brief visit to the new Vongola base in Japan, he was involved in a battle where he was the first of the to-the-future characters in the arc to open a box that transforms his ring into a weapon, successfully defeating one of the Millefiore Family's Blackspell members. He receives a letter in the G-Script from his future self who is now in the past. It tells him that because they brought the Vongola rings to the future where they no longer exist they are temporarily stuck in the future. To return to the past Tsuna must gather the guardians, defeat Byakuran, kill the man with glasses (Irie Shouichi) and they will return.
He later engages in a fight with another Blackspell member, Gamma. He soon came to realize that he was no match for Gamma and, as he was about to receive the finishing blow, was saved by Hibari. After recovering and taking Yamamato's words about him being selfish to heart, Gokudera begins his training with his sister. At first he refused, however Bianchi offered him something that belonged to their father if he completed his training. She was merciless on him and was very disappointed at his lack of progress, especially after she gave him ring boxes his future self had left behind. He later escapes from her training and is not heard of again for some time. When Tsuna searches for him after training he emerges with a new technique and, oddly enough, a wild cat on his head. The cat is revealed to be a box weapon that Gokudera couldn't bear to send back to its box. His sister scolds him for this behavior and his skipping their training. However, he has been training on his own without her. He later names the cat Uri - which, in Japanese, means Melon.
Gokudera is currently attacking the Millefiore's Melone base. He was reluctant to allow Tsuna to go off and be the decoy on his own and attempted to go back to help him when he believed he was in danger, but was stopped by the rest of his party. After being separated from Yamamoto and Lal Mirch, he and Ryohei found themselves face to face with Gamma. After Ryohei is severally injured fighting Gamma, Gokudera battles Gamma using his Sistema C.A.I. weapon system.
After almost being killed by a Flame Arrow, Gamma discovers that Gokudera coated his natural Storm flame with a Rain flame, which allowed Gokudera to destroy Gamma's shield and attack him. Gokudera reveals that he can also use Sun, Lightning, and Cloud flames, along with the Rain and Storm flames. Using his Sistema C.A.I., which stands for Sistema Cambio Arma Instantaneo (instantaneous armament change system), Gokudera rapidly changes the nature of his attacks and is able to badly wound Gamma. However, Gamma unleashes the power of a rare lightning flame box to change his volt fox black. They succeed in destroying Gokudera's defenses and prepare to finish him off. However, before Gamma can attack, Uri emerges from the pouch of Ryohei's kangaroo guardian in a massive new form. Gokudera realised that Uri was actually a part of C.A.I. system and he is prepared to attack Ganma with the new form of his sytem C.A.I.2. Gokudera then porceeds to battle Gamma, and after a powerful shot from his skull cannon, Gamma begins going unconscious(or possibly dying), and Gamma begins to have a flashback about Uni and his past.
[edit] Relationships
[edit] Bianchi
Bianchi is Gokudera's half-sister, although they have a difficult relationship. Gokudera can't see her without becoming very ill. Bianchi later remedies this by wearing glasses, goggles, or anything that covers her face around him. Their strained relationship stems from their youth, when Bianchi would use Gokudera as a test subject for her latest poisonous creation. In the future arc, Bianchi reveals that although they have the same father, Gokudera is an illegitimate child. The relationship between Bianchi and Gokudera was never that good as his father always favoured his legitimate child Bianchi. When Bianchi was appointed as Gokudera's home tutor she promised to give him something from their father if he was able to complete his training before the attack to Millefiore's Melone base. This made Gokudera avoid her despite that she was supposed to be his tutor. In the end, before they leave for the attack, Gokudera told Bianchi that he would like to talk with her when they come back.
[edit] Parents
Gokudera loved his mother very much, but she died in a car accident on the way to see him. It turned out that his father had her "taken care of" as she was his mistress and not his wife.
Gokudera had a bad relationship with his father. He was the boss of another mafia family and as Gokudera was his illegitimate child he paid less attention to him and favoured Bianchi, his legitimate child.
[edit] Tsuna
After being saved by Tsuna, Gokudera pledged his loyalty to Tsuna as the tenth boss of the Vongola family. He is fiercely loyal to him, but shows that he wants to be his friend, not just his subordinate. He also gets frustrated of anyone who gets close to Tsuna. Yet he still remains loyal to him. This loyalty was tested later on and he turned down a promotion from the ninth (IX) boss that was actually a test to gauge his loyalty. When highly praising Tsuna, he is depicted as a dog sometimes.
[edit] Yamamoto
Gokudera sees Yamamoto as a rival for the position of Tsuna's right-hand man, and as such seems to dislike him intensely. He is also sometimes gets frustrated at him, of either his talent or his close relationship with Tsuna. Despite Gokudera's strained opinion, the two are friends and spend a lot of time together; Yamamoto often holds Gokudera back when he's upset or the two fight together as a team. Although he states that he hates Yamamoto, due to his all-around good-guy personality, he sees him as one of his few close friends. Gokudera seems to trust Yamamoto, enough to leave things to him and entrust Tsuna's safety to him.
[edit] Dr. Shamal
Gokudera met the good doctor when he was young. He wanted to be his apprentice, but was turned down. The doctor turned him on to his current form of attack, dynamite. Shamal also agreed to train him during the Varia Arc. Their relationship is strained, at best, but it could be viewed as similar to Tsuna's relationship with his father, as both the older men have only the best intentions for their younger counterparts.
It seemed that Gokudera looked up to Shamal as the "manly pattern" he was missing. Not only he had copied his hairstyle but he had also asked Shamal to teach him his mosquito technique; yet as it was mentioned above Shamal turned him town an told him that he should create his own technique instead.
[edit] Abilities
As one of the Vongola family's tenth generation guardians, and the guardian of the Vongola Ring of Storm, Gokudera has access to great power. In the Future Arc, his ring transforms into a specific weapon when combined with its ring boxes, also emitting its own Dying Will flame.
Gokudera has a knack for school and is quite intelligent; he even created his own code system which we see in the future arc (G-Script).
[edit] Bombs
Gokudera is known as "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" (スモーキン・ボム 隼人, Sumōkin Bomu Hayato?), using dynamite as his signature weapon. During Gokudera's "dynamite maintenance", it is revealed that he carries huge amounts of dynamite on him at all times.
Below is a list of what he's used during the series.
- Double Bomb
- Triple Bomb
- Double Bomb with mini bombs
- Bomb Blaze
- Rocket Bomb
Originally, Gokudera's main weakness was the fact that although his bombs made a deadly weapon, it was difficult to pinpoint and calculate the exact distance between himself and his target and sync it with the amount of time it would take for the bombs to actually explode. In order to remedy this, during the Varia arc, Gokudera invented a new type of bombs accurately dubbed "Rocket Bombs." Each one, once thrown, causes the backside of the bombs to fire up and rocket towards his opponent like high-speed missiles, which then explode on impact. It was this technique, coupled with Gokudera's cunning that allowed him to defeat Belphegor.
[edit] Sistema C.A.I.
The future Gokudera has created Sistema Cambio Arma Istantaneo (lit. System Change Arms Instantaneous; Italian for Instantaneous Arms Rearrangement System), commonly called Sistema C.A.I., a complex system of box weapons that utilize all the flames that flow within his body. All the sixteen boxes have skulls on the outside of them. While everyone is aligned with one of the seven ring elements, in order to draw out the Dying Will Flame, a person will end up drawing other elements that is weaker than the person's main Dying Will flame. Sistema C.A.I. is designed to use such weaker flames to utilize multiple rings to open and complement his storm-based element. Just as the name stated, Sistema C.A.I. allow rapid changing of explosives and rockets.
With the boxes, Gokudera is only able to open four with his Ring of Storm. In this state, the sistema C.A.I. appears to be circular shields of bones with unknown capabilities. From one of those four boxes he can draw a Ring of Rain, and then sequentially acquire Lighting, Cloud, and Sun rings with different combinations, allowing him to open up more boxes and use their associated ability to strengthen his own storm Dying will Flame. Gokudera's new attacks are covered with a layer of another element.
In addition to elemental boxes, there is an animal box containing a wild cat which Gokudera named Uri. Uri hates being in its box and does not listen to Gokudera. However, with accidental help from this feline and through trial and error, Gokudera was able to reach proficiency in the system's use in time for the Millefiore infiltration. During his fight with Gamma Uri blindly tried to attack Gamma even though he clearly was at a disadvantage but is saved by Ryohei. Uri later recovered inside the pouch of Ryohei's kangaroo box animal. As a result of the kangaroo's Sun attribute flame, the pouch not only heals Uri, but transforms him into a massive leopard-like cat with large flaming skull shields on his shoulders.
[edit] Other Boxes
Another box his future self left behind contains metallic mini "cannon" with a skull at the end; it sits attached to his arm. So far the cannon has shown two abilities. By expelling a powerful gust of wind, the cannon can temporarily diffuse the Dying Will Flames of others. Aside from diffusing the flames it does no damage, however. The second ability, which he dubbed Flame Arrow, is a more offensive one, allows the cannon to shoot a destructive explosive blast provided Gokudera loads dynamite into it. It communicates its needs through a projection of Italian words. It seems that in the fight against Gamma, Gokudera uses the power of other attributed rings to enpower the cannon and give it a special effect:
Rain: By covering the storm rockets with Rain flames, enemy flames are weakened by the Rain's tranquility and then destroyed by the Storm's degeneration. Allows the attack to break through certain Dying Will Flame shields.
Cloud: Creates multiple beams to engulf the opponent.
Sun: The Sun's activation and high power output increases the speed of the storm rockets greatly, making it harder to dodge.
Lightning: Fires a charged beam of both storm and lighting flame called "Flame Thunder". With the tow flames' properties, it is likely that the attack is a solid beam due to the lightning's solidification, and carries the properties of electricity and degeneration. A lightning bolt appears on the arm-skull cannon when the technique is used.
[edit] Character Reception
Gokudera has continunously appeared in the Top 5 of The Official Shonen Jump Popularity poll. In the first poll, Gokudera ranks 1st place; even in front of the main character, Tsuna, who came second. In the second poll, Gokudera came in third place, and in the most recent poll he came in 4th place.
