The Haxey Hood - The Fool's speech - Haxey, North Lincolnshire, Great Britain

A key moment in the ancient tradition of the Haxey Hood. Clutching the hood, the fool makes his speech to the gathered crowd and all join in with "hoose agen hoose, toon agen toone, if tha meets a man, knock'im doone, but don't 'ut 'im". The Haxey Hood originates from an event in 1213AD when Lady Mowbray was riding by when her hood blew off, several local labourers vied with each other to return it and the amusing sight prompted her to present thirteen strips of land to repeat the 'game' each year. Every 6th January (old Christmas Day) the Haxey Hood takes place as it has for almost 800 years, watched by a crowd of hundreds, here the fool makes his speech from the base of an ancient cross by the church - the competition for the hood follows.
