  • Consensus has it that species names on Wikipedia are to be capitalized; warrants a move of this page to Hawaiian Hibiscus as opposed to Hawaiian hibiscus (lowercase h) --James Easton 00:20, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Have no problem myself with that suggestion; however Hibiscus (a genus) and hibiscus (a common name for plants in Hibiscus and perhaps related genera with similar flowers) are really different words and this article is intended to cover the latter. - Marshman 00:33, 13 Jul 2004 (UTC)
ARRGGHH!!! Common names of birds are capitalized, because the Audubon Society decided to do so and maintains a list of "official common names", to avoid the problem of changes in scientific names. Sometimes common names of other vertebrates are capitalized, but usually not. Names of plants and other animals should NEVER, EVER be capitalized (unless it includes a proper name, like "Hawaiian", obviously). KarlM 09:04, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
