Originally known as Hawthorn Junior High School housing grades 7 & 8, re-configuration in school year 2005-6 changed the name to its present Middle School South. In 2006-7, grade 6 was introduced into the class mix.

Middle School South offers educational opportunities in an art and technology rotation that includes music, art, and industrial and consumer technology. The music program provides classes in band, orchestra, and general music. Art allows students to pursue interests in oil, watercolor, and ceramics. The industrial and consumer departments provide students with exposure to cooking, sewing, drafting, electronics, and wood shop.

In 2006, closed-circuit broadcast capabilities were introduced to the building with operations being handled by students under staff supervision. News, weather, sports, and video clips of school activities were broadcast daily and provided interested students with an introduction to television.

Middle South provides services for mainstreamed hearing impaired students grades 5 through 8. Sign instructors participate in the close-circuit television programming to provide access to daily news.
