Haute-Nendaz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The resort of Haute-Nendaz is located in the Swiss canton of Valais. Haute-Nendaz comprises together with Siviez and the old village of Basse-Nendaz the commune.

Haute-Nendaz is situated on a sunny plateau/terrace at an altitude of between 1300m and 1500m. It has panoramic views of the Bernese and Vaud Alps. In winter it forms part of the 4-Vallées and is one of the most extensive ski areas in Europe and by far the largest in Switzerland.

Located on the slopes of Balavaux there are a large number of superb 1000 year old larch trees (locals claim that some even date back to BC). Considering the height and weather extremes they have faced, these trees are quite extraordinary and walking past them in summer or skiing in winter adds a sense of dimension to the experience. On the same slope you can sleep and eat at the "cabine de balavaux".

Haute Nendaz has various neighborhoods some of which are called: Les Clèves, Le Clou, Eterpey and Les Ecluses. At the center point of "Les Clèves"you will find the "Hameau les Clèves" restaurant.

[edit] Historical times

Documents dating back to 985 mention the village of Nendaz. The Nendaz community is largely based on agriculture. During the 19th century the Nendaz area experienced a gold fever. From various locations a diversity of minerals have been extracted from the ground. The main source of mineral wealth remained carbon which was extracted from Aproz.

As of the 20th century mining started to be replaced by tourism. As of 1958 Nendaz saw the creation of their first cablecart lift and the start of Télénendaz.
