Hate (comic)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hate is a humorous, cynical, semi-autobiographical comic book by writer-artist Peter Bagge. First published by Fantagraphics in 1990 it ran for 30 issues, and was one of alternative comics best-selling titles. The series continues in Hate Annual, a yearly collection of comics stories and articles that began in 2000.
Hate tells the story of Buddy Bradley, a disenfranchised borderline-alcoholic but ultimately responsible Generation X slacker, and his perilous search for love and happiness in modern-day Seattle and suburban New Jersey. It's the continuation of "The Bradleys", one of the main regular features in Bagge's previous comic, Neat Stuff.
The main characters include: Stinky, Buddy's aptly nicknamed roommate; Lisa Leavenworth, Buddy's love interest; Valerie, another love interest; George Cecil Hamilton III, Buddy's other roommate and über geek; and Buddy's family.
A major story change took place in issue #15, when Buddy moved from Seattle back home to New Jersey, at which point the comic, once in black and white, changed to color. Bagge has said that coloring the strip after Buddy moves in with his family was important for it not to become too depressing.[citation needed]
Bagge spent years trying to get Hate turned into an animated TV series, but while a pilot was shown to focus groups, they didn't like it and the project was never aired.
