In 2007, Bury was ranked 34th out of the 149 Local Education Authorities — and third out of ten in Greater Manchester — for its National Curriculum assessment performance.[1] Measured on the percentage of pupils attaining at least 5 A*–C grades at GCSE including maths and English, the Bury LEA was 27th out of 149: 52.9% of pupils achieved this objective, against a national average of 46.7%.[2] Both authorised and unauthorised absence from Bury's secondary schools were lower than the national average in the 2006/2007 academic year: the rate of unauthorised absence was 0.7% (against 1.4% nationally), while authorised absences were recorded at 6.0% against the national average of 6.4%.[3] At GCSE level, the independent Bury Grammar School (Girls) was the most successful of Bury's 15 secondary schools: 98% of pupils achieved at least 5 A*–C grades at including maths and English.[4] The Boys' division of Bury Grammar School reported a zero percentage for this measure because it enters pupils for a different examination which is not recognised by the Government for the purposes of the school league tables.[5]

As well as the 15 mainstream secondary schools, there is one special school. The Elms Bank Specialist Arts College caters for over 150 pupils aged between 11 and 19 with Special Educational Needs.[6] The borough also has 63 mainstream primary schools and one special primary school.[7]
