Haslar is the name of a place in the United Kingdom. It is found at the southern tip of Gosport, Hampshire and takes its name from two Anglo-Saxon words: haesel, meaning hazel, and ora, meaning bank. It was a bank of hazel strewn on marshy grounds around the creek to make it passable and habitable in olden times that gave it its name.
The location principally has the Royal Hospital Haslar (previously the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar) and also HM Young Offenders' Institution Haslar, which is now a detention centre for immigrants.
The site for Haslar hospital was purchased in 1745. The area was farmed and was called Haslar Farm though this was spelt Hasler Farm at the time. The site was an unusual location for a hospital because it was surrounded by the Gosport Creek with no readily available access. The area was chosen to prevent sailors who had been press ganged, i.e taken against their will by a gang of sailors and kept locked aboard ship until well at sea and then made to work for the Navy, from absconding.
