[edit] Awards and recognition
Hasbrouck Heights High School was the 92nd-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools.[2]
[edit] Athletics
The school participates in the Bergen County Scholastic League National athletic conference. The team nickname is the Aviators.
Hasbrouck Heights has long enjoyed success on the athletic field. Others sports notwithstanding, the football, wrestling, and track programs have established themselves among the elite on the league, county, and state level.
[edit] Baseball
The baseball team won the North I, Group I state sectional championship in 2007, topping Verona High School 7-4 in the tournament final. [3]
[edit] Boys Soccer
The Hasbrouck Heights Varsity Soccer program was ran for many years by head coach Dennis Sayer. After he resigned following the 2001 season, Peter Morisco stepped in as head coach and took the team to the states two out of the three years he ran the program. The first game of the 2004 states was an overtime win against Leonia High School, the first in the soccer team's history. The next game was the state semis against North Warren Regional High School getting the furthest the team ever did, falling 3-2. Joe Bitteto took over the team and brought it to its 2nd consecutive state appearance. The Team is currently coached by Vincent Marchese.
[edit] Football
Currently coached by Nick Delcalzo, the last state championship won by the football program was in 1994. In 2005, Hasbrouck Heights made the Group 1, North 1 State Final in Giants Stadium, losing 27-7 to Pompton Lakes High School.[4] Hasbrouck Heights made the 2nd round in the North 1 Group 1 state playoffs in 2006, beating Pascack Hills High School 9-3 in the opening round then losing to ultimate winner Bogota High School 24-17 in the semifinals.[5]
In 2007, the team won the North I, Group I state sectional championship with a 26-16 win over New Milford High School, in a game played at Giants Stadium.[6][7]
[edit] Girls Soccer
Coached for a decade by Ollie Pimm. The Girls Varsity team won its sixth straight BCSL-National Division championship and won almost 100 straight game against in-league competition.[8] They have not won a state championship under Pimm, losing to River Dell Regional High School in the semifinals of the 2007 state tournament.[9] The JV Girl's Soccer team has been coached by Joe Mastropietro for the last five years.
[edit] Wrestling
Many outstanding wrestlers have passed through the halls of Hasbrouck Heights High School. With the creation of a recreation level program, established in the 1970's by then-director, Andy "The King" Feintuch, experience began to filter into the high school program. In 1976, heavyweight Bill Spindler became the school's first ever NJSIAA state champion, pinning each of his opponents on his way to the gold medal.
Team success came with the hiring of head coach, Tom Basile, who would guide the 1989 team to league and county titles. The Aviator's would capture their first ever North Jersey Group I state sectional championship after a one-sided victory over defending champion Waldwick High School. The team was back-to-back champions in 1990. For their accomplishments, the 1989 team would be elected to the Hasbrouck Heights Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
In the mid-1990s, HH alum Mike Scuilla would take over the reins from Basile and continue the team's winning ways. The pinnacle individual performance came in 2001 when Morgan Horner won the 189 lb. weight class at the NJSIAA championships defeating the defending champion. This accomplishment would earn Horner the award for the championship's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
The wrestling team won the North II, Group I state sectional title in 2006 with a 43-28 win against New Providence High School.[10][11] The 2007team repeated as North II, Group I state sectional championship with a 46-16 win vs. Madison High School.[12]

At the 2006 National Scholastic Press Association Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, Pilot's Log earned the highest accolade of "best in show" for newspapers with 13-16 pages, from all high schools, regardless of size.[13] The newspaper staff also walked away with a National Pacemaker Award for the publication, one of 26 high school publications nationwide to be recognized, unofficially known as the "Pulitzer Prizes of student journalism."[14]
