Hasan di Tiro (born 4 September 1930) is the founder of the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), an organisation which has been seeking the independence of Aceh from Indonesia since the 1970s. After the tsunami of 2004 the GAM and the Indonesian government agreed to a peace treaty in which more autonomy for Aceh was accepted by di Tiro and his followers.
After leading an attack that killed two American engineers in 1977, di Tiro was hunted down by Indonesian soldiers. He was shot in the leg, and fled to Malaysia.[1]
Since 1980 he has lived in Stockholm, Sweden, and has Swedish citizenship. Hasan di Tiro is the heir to the Sultans of Aceh and if monarchy in Aceh were to be restored he would be Sultan of Aceh.[2]
