[edit] Renaissance
This period of artistic transformation led to research from the ancient (Grece, Rome) and new techniques, like perspective and oil painting : the colours then used kept freshness and light until now.
An italian inspired school includes Quentin Matsys, Roger Van der Weyden. Another school takes common inspiration with a more realistic (landscapes, games), or even fantastic, verve : Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel (the Elder).
[edit] Baroque
Historically, that period is related to as Dutch Golden Age. Religious themes (Adam and Eve, Crucifixion) are on par with intimist scenes, playing with reflections and opulence ; still lifes, portraits, genre paintings. Enter Rembrandt with plays of light and shadow, self protraits and paintings paid by corporations, (the night watch, and also civil guards by Franz Hals).
