[edit] Pascal’s wader

Pascal’s reflexions upon the nature of the motion of a wading bird were aroused by the sight of a long-billed stork (the stuffed bird could still be observed in the Museum in Paris, France, but it has been shown that it was not a different species from Ciconia ciconia, the white stork).

An fr:opuscule that was printed in the Netherlands is extant, that allows us to partake the depths of his insights upon that question. From memory only, I can tell that it was premonitory of Ferenczi’s works Thalassa: A Theory of Genitality. The utter desire to return to the primitive ocean, and so on.

There are also bright passages about Archimedes’ law, and charts giving the difficulty to begin a flight when immerged, in correlation to the depth of the immersion.

If that content is verifiable I'll create the WP:stub.

[edit] How to pre

Preformatted or code text : you render them using htlm tags. But remember that pre wont't break long lines, and the printing of the page will truncate some text. Code, on the other hand, lets wikifying things like templates and does not help when line breaks, in a list, need another rendering method. See those examples (same text all the time : best choice is bold.)

  • Long line - pre
<div class="NavHead" style="{{ #if: {{{COLOR|}}} | background: {{{COLOR}}} | background: #ccccff }}">{{{TITLE}}}</div>
  • Listing - pre
{{Userboxtop|My choices are}}
{{User m0tlab}}
{{Userboxbottom}}
There should be more examples ...
  • Long line - nowiki

<div class="NavHead" style="{{ #if: {{{COLOR|}}} | background: {{{COLOR}}} | background: #ccccff }}">{{{TITLE}}}</div>

  • Listing - nowiki

{{Userboxtop|My choices are}} {{User m0tlab}} {{Userboxbottom}} There should be more examples ...

  • Long line - code
  • Listing - code
My choices are

Template:User m0tlab

There should be more examples ...

[edit] Pre mature conclusion

The best method is code + nowiki for a long line, but just pre for a listing : If your listing includes long lines ... tou're stuck.

  • Long line - code + nowiki

<div class="NavHead" style="{{ #if: {{{COLOR|}}} | background: {{{COLOR}}} | background: #ccccff }}">{{{TITLE}}}</div>

  • Listing - code + nowiki

{{Userboxtop|My choices are}} <br> {{User m0tlab}} <br> {{Userboxbottom}} There should be more examples ...

[edit] Building knowledge here

You have to learn much to do good. This is true everywhere, and maybe harder for a Wikipedia editor. You must learn :

  • The spirit of the free contributed encyclopedia
  • The specifications for the tools and practices
  • More about the information that you want to add and the context.

There are traps almost everywhere and this page talks also about them. Be bold! Try anyway and have fun.

[edit] Spirit

  • What is an encyclopedia ? Why Wikipedia ? What does Wikipedia become now ?

Encyclopedias originated with data about science, technique and arts. Data were collected and verified by specialists in every domain. They were big, expensive books and included texts, tables and images (engravings). Their target are still educated people who need to know more about a subject they know little about. If they are not educated, or know too little, or too much, they won’t understand, or think to look about ; masters won’t need them. Universal education means access for everyone to enough knowledge to use an encyclopedia. That goal is nowhere achieved.

Wikipedia was created to ensure that everyone accesses to every data, freely and in his own language. The above questions about levels of education were not answered : "everyone" remains everyone educated enough to seek more by himself on the net. Giving everyone full authorisation to create, update and maintain Wikipedia’s articles was devised for a quicker and broader coverage.

That was successful in terms of subjects covered, especially hobbies such as sports, TV series, pop music, obscure people and places and such. And it brought problems about authority, vandalism and administration that are resolved with principles and also case by case approaches.

  • See the principles

[edit] Specs

  • Texts, encyclopedia articles and languages

Do not be afraid by the complexity of the to-dos, help and how-to pages. Everyone can add help pages ; the redundancy and the localisation of specific information are really frustrating.

Publising a text needs rules : the wider the public, the stricter the rules.

  • See the rules about texts

Creating an encyclopedia with cross references, images, tables and categories brings more rules about authoring, property, data mining.

  • See more policies about articles

Uploading a text on the net requires special skills about computer languages. The more simple, the more efficient : here it is, Wikitext. But features like a table or a template ask for more learning.

[edit] More

  • Questions, tip pages and about

You came to edit an article : create it, correct it or add precisions to it. Your text must be weighed against existing data and Wikipedia specification. You have to organise yourself and maybe think about an agenda.

Remember that information knows no rule, it is made to be spread. But how and when, you must choose. Whatever you bring, some shall read and try to rewrite when they think it necessary. Think about that : what if ? Does this knowledge lead you to change your strategy or your methods ?

Most people shall offer help ; some may not like at all your work, nor Wikipedia ; others may abhor knowledge, in that case it must not be your problem. When you have to go further, keep cool.

  • See how to quickly resolve problems

What kind of tasks shall you endeavour, what kind of domain shall you complete or review ? Different tasks, different tools. You need to refer to the tips that stick to your own way regularly. There are links everywhere for those tips.

  • Create your own tips page

Wikipedia is a phenomenon in itself. It has its own history, importance, reviews, prospective …
