[edit] Categorization
The category 'American newspaper editors' is a sub-category of 'American journalists'. Per Wikipedia:Categorization#Some general guidelines, we do not categorize an article with two categories in the same heirarchy without good reason. Harry Ashmore worked as a reporter for just four years before becoming an editor. He is famous as an editor, not as a reporter. He is properly categorized as a newspaper editor. As newspaper editors are included in the higher category of journalists, and he is not notable for any other form of journalism than as an editor, it is incorrect to have both categories for the article. -- Donald Albury(Talk) 10:12, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- The category 'American newspaper editors' is a sub-category of 'American journalists'. It is not. I removed it from that category because a newspaper editor is certainly not a type of journalist. "Editors" do not write articles and reports themselves. Circeus 14:17, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

- Per Wiktionary, journalism is
-
-
- The activity or profession of being a journalist.
- The aggregating, writing, editing, and presenting of news or news articles for widespread distribution, typically in periodical print publications and broadcast news media, for the purpose of informing the audience.
- The style of writing characteristic of material in periodical print publications and broadcast news media, consisting of direct presentation of facts or events with an attempt to minimize analysis or interpretation. (emphasis added)

- A typical definition for journalist in other sources is, somebody engaged in journalism. Some sources also add something like, a writer or editor for a newspaper or magazine or for television or radio. Since a journalist practices journalism, I looked up journalism. The definition for journalism inAnswer.com (taken from the American Heritage Dictionary), die.net, Encarta, Merriam-Webster Online and others all define editing to be part of journalism. - Unless you can find superior sources that state that editing is not part of journalism, I will soon be restoring the status quo ante. -- Donald Albury(Talk) 15:08, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
