Lt Gov William Stoughton (1631–1701) overlooking one of the buildings of Harvard College, quite probably Stoughton Hall for which he was its main benefactor. The painting dates to circa 1700.
This picture, which was taken from: Albert Bushnell Hart, Commonwealth History of Massachusetts (1927, vol. 1) opposite p. 562; was originally taken from an original portrait presumably still in the possession of Harvard University.
The painting, which is classified as an American Primitive Painting, is over 300 years old and was presumably produced for William Stoughton during his official capacity as a judge of the Royal Crown, though many American Primitive paintings are known to be second generation paintings copied from originals.
Its use here is purely for educational purposes, and the person unploading it does not will for it to be misused, or intend that anyone else misuse it.
It represents a cropped image from the original painting that also shows Stoughton's hand outstretched in a typical 17th Century fashion.
The painting itself constitutes the earliest depiction of one of the buildings of Harvard College. The earliest entire view of Harvard College was not accomplished until 1726 by the artist William Burgis.
A better version, preferably in color, of this painting would be appreciated.
