Haruka Tanizawa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haruka Tanizawa (谷沢 はるか Tanizawa Haruka) is a character in the novel Battle Royale, and the film and manga of the same name. In the film she was played by Satomi Ishii. Ai Iwamura "stands-in" for Ishii as Haruka in one of the scenes [1].
Haruka has a blood type of B.
[edit] Pre-Program
Haruka Tanizawa is one of the class of third-year students at the fictional Shiroiwa Junior High School in the fictional town of Shiroiwa (the town is in the Kagawa Prefecture in the novel and manga and the Kanagawa Prefecture in the film). She was a very tall girl (172 centimeters), with short hair, who played as an attacker on the volleyball team. Haruka is said to look almost like a boy, especially when she is with her petite friend Chisato Matsui. Haruka's best friend was Yukie Utsumi. According to the student statistics that may be viewed during the movie, Haruka was one of the most intelligent girls in class and only had average stamina and courage, which may make it seem that that her volleyball skills were based upon her intelligence.
In the manga, it is implied that she has had an encounter with boys which left bad impressions; this pushes her to keep Yukie's group all girls.
[edit] During The Program
Haruka is one of the girls who joins Yukie in the lighthouse. In the manga, she is the one who pushes for an all-girl group after both she and Yukie witness Kazushi Niida kill Yoshio Akamatsu. She and Chisato cook the meal which Yuko Sakaki later poisons, putting them under suspicion when Yuka Nakagawa eats the meal and dies.
In the novel and manga, during the gun fight after Yuka's death, Haruka witnesses Satomi Noda killing Chisato and Yukie. Haruka dives for Yukie's gun, and Satomi shoots her in the side with her Uzi. Haruka shoots Satomi in the head, and Satomi (probably unintentionally) fires the Uzi again, killing Haruka as she dies herself. In the manga, Haruka is already mortally wounded, and manages to kill Satomi before she dies.
In the film, Haruka sees Satomi kill Chisato, and Haruka and Yukie pit themselves against Satomi. Both are shot by Satomi; Haruka dies after Satomi's last batch of gunfire. After Satomi runs out of bullets and fails to shoot Yuko, Yukie kills Satomi and dies from her injuries several moments later.
