Harry MacDowell is a character of the Gungrave series. He is the main antagonist in the first "Gungrave" game and the deuteragonist in the anime. He once a small time criminal who later became the well-known Millennion's boss. In order to achieve his goal, he betrayed and killed his best friend Brandon Heat, who later Necro-Rised to revenge.

[edit] Early life

As a child, Harry was bought to an orphanage as, he was abused by the principal. At that time, he coincidentally met the silent Brandon Heat, and the two quickly became best friends. Because of his abusiveness, Harry and Brandon made a promise with each other to go to the top.

[edit] Joining Millennion

Years later, Harry and Brandon became leaders of a small gang. They often fight with other gangs, this later leads to their friends' deaths when a big shot criminal returns. Filled with sorrow, Harry intends to leave town and travel with Brandon. As it just so happened, the pair learn about Maria, Big Daddy and Millennion. Hearing rumors about this organization and wanting to go up, they immediately join Millennion.

As soon as they join Millennion, the pair is separated, Harry becomes an assistant of one of Millennion's executives. He also befriends with Bob Poundmax and Ballardbird Lee. Time flies, Harry and Brandon are reunited.

Thirst for powers, Harry learns about the assassination on Big Daddy of the "Lightning" syndicate, he foils their plan. This witnessed by Bear Walken, who he met before and later became his father-in-law.

Five years later, Harry becomes a well-known executive; because of his high reputation, the Lighting hires a hitman named Bunji Kugashira to assassinate him. However, he convinces Bunji to work for them. Thus, he and Brandon are invited to become Big Daddy's family. At that moment, he meets and fells in love with Sherry, Bear Walken's daughter.

The following years, Brad Wong was released and goes against Millennion, Harry comes and meets them in order to stop their plans. On the other hand, Wong after seeing Brandon's skills and the Necrolization created by Dr.Tokioka, he kills his followers and decides to use the Necrolization powers to wage a war with both Millennion and Brandon. When Brandon goes and faces them alone, Harry catches up with Ballardbird Lee, who leaks their informations out. The two of them provoke each other in a fight, and in the end, Harry convinces Lee to join him again and takes him to Dr.Tokioka's lab. Thus, they go to meet Brandon but saved by Bear Walken instead.

[edit] The successor and Brandon's death

Three years later, Harry begins to think about becoming the new boss, so he kills some of Big Daddy's family member; also, he wins both Bear Walken's favor and Sherry. In addition to achieve his goal, he forces Dr.Tokioka to work for him and to continue on the Necrolization project with new generation of deadmen. That was when Big Daddy retires, people were expecting Harry to become his successor. Big Daddy however, sees through his intentions, appoints another executive to become the new boss. Despite having lost, Harry seems to be cheerful, but he begins to have second thought after he heard Brandon and Daddy' conversation about betrayal. Three months later, the new boss was taken down mysteriously.

Brandon and Harry return to their old town, on their way home, Harry asks Brandon to finish Big Daddy, but is punched. Brandon then points his gun at him, but he cannot kill his own best friend, so Harry takes advantage on that and kills him.

After his best friend's death, Harry becomes Millennion's new boss. He covers Brandon's death by saying that he (Brandon) is a traitor and Harry kills him because he points a gun at him. However, Harry is still haunted by Brandon's death. Later on the story, the new deadmen begin to gone berserk and out of control, Harry states that was Brandon's curse. At that time, he hears gun shots over the lab; the next morning, he found one of the surviving scientist and appoints him to replace Tokioka.

Several days later, Maria discovers the truth, she then intends to take revenge on Harry, but is foiled by Big Daddy. Big Daddy later goes and meets to Harry, during their discussion, Harry realizes that he was a resemblance to Daddy, angered by this, he kills him and later rules the town.

Thirteen years later, Harry marries Sherry, and now has mysteriously grown old. In one of his ordinary days, he is informed about Maria's location and Mika, so he sents hitmen to kill them. Mika however manages to survive, and later she meets Grave, Brandon's form after being Necro-Rised. This later learned by Harry about his long dead friend.

When Grave hears about Harry's party, he goes there and faces him with the Big Four. Harry then order Bob Poundmax to finish Grave for good, but Bob is killed. Thus, Ballardbird Lee swears to take revenge for Bob, he requests Harry to give him information about Grave as soon as possible. When Lee kidnaps Mika, Harry was surprised about his best friend's story and orders Lee to take care of the rest, but Lee later is killed like Bob.

With the defeat of both Bob and Lee, and Bunji becomes missing, Millennion's executives begin to disagree with Harry's opinion. This later turns to be more serious after Bear Walken's death, they decide to kill Harry. Being protected by Bear's Overkill, he and Sherry manage to survive, but later his wife takes a bullet for him and dies. Angered by this, he buries his wife, and releases all of his Orgmen to destroy the traitors; however, the executives are equipped with Anti-Orgmen weapons, his plan ends in faillure.

Harry soon becomes targeted, he runs away from the executives and ends up in his old town, where he confronts a nearly dead Grave. The two of them then go back to their old hide out and talk about their past. When Harry requests to end each other lives, Millennion's agents show up and attack them, later they bomb the house. Though believing to be dead, Brandon saves Harry's life, but as soon as they resurface, they both take a shower of bullets, and Harry is almost shot to death.

Knowing that he won't be able to survive, Harry asks Brandon to end his life and together go back with him to their past lives. In the end, Harry and Brandon make amends and decide to end each other's lives instead of being killed by Millenion's agents. Mika somehow manages to convince the remaining Executives to call off the attack, however it is unclear by the last scene whether or not Mika was too late.

The last scene is shown Brandon and Harry reunite with their friends and beloved, and the first time they met as children.

Unlike the anime, in the game, Harry does not share a close friendship with Brandon, most of his past are unrevealed. Also, unlike the anime, when he kills Brandon, he says that Brandon is a coward while in the anime he did not. The anime shown that Brandon is hesitate to kill him while in the game, he kills Harry after defeating the Big Daddy Orgman and Harry apologizes to him. Harry's wife, Sherry is killed in the first game, but is Necro-Rised in the second game to avenge his death.
