Harold Wright (clarinetist)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harold Wright was principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1970 to 1993. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Ralph Mclane. He became a member of the Houston Symphony after graduating and later became principal clarinetist of the Dallas Symphony.

Wright, ("Buddy", so nicknamed) was considered stylistically and musically a unique clarinetist whose musicality and abilities made him a soloist in his own right. He had the ability to influence not only the woodwind section of the Boston Symphony Orchestra but the orchestra in general. He was able to incorporate German, French and American styles of playing into his own trademark sound. Wright has influenced a generation of clarinetists and his legacy lives on.
