Harmony at one time was the largest American musical instrument maker. The company was founded by German immigrant J.F. Schultz in 1892 and purchased in 1916 by Sears & Roebuck of Chicago]. In 1940, Sears sold Harmony to a group headed by Jay Kraus. By 1923 the annual overall instrument production was 250.000. The Harmony company went out of business in 1974.
